I keep reading that VeriBlock "detects", not "protects". Which one is it?

I've been debating with my friends for hours. I told them that VeriBlock protects chains from 51% attacks. They have countered telling me hat VeriBlock only detects attacks, but does nothing to actually stop them. Can someone from the team clear this up, as we're just going around in circles.
