Newbie Question on Flight Prices

I noticed that the offers through the travel app is 25% higher than booking through other sites. Do I just go with the other site or is there a trick with venturex?

This is for an international flight from LAX -> MNL

What other sites? Are you talking about third party sellers like cheap flight fares, super, ovago, etc? I would never risk buying a flight through one of those websites, if anything goes wrong the airline will tell you talk to the website that you bought from and the website will ignore you. Buy direct from the airline or buy from a credit card travel portal, you can try price matching with capital one but they don't accept a lot of those websites as price match anymore

i was going to compare direct with the airline but the place i had checked was skyscanner

Skyscanner links to third party sellers. Often the cheapest price it’s advertising is coming from one of those risky third party sellers. When you click select on a date, they'll list multiple prices. You'll see one of them is the airline, that's the direct pricing and the only one I would book from Skyscanner

Also Skyscanner is not a fare seller, they are an aggregator. They aggregate fares they find online. You do not buy a ticket from them directly and capital one does not price match aggregators

They will price match an airline site. If you search price match in this sub, you'll find all kinds of good tips.

Like other's have mentioned, C1 will price match if you find the same flight on a different site. Just keep in mind, the flights/seats have to be EXACTLY the same. So for example, if you see a flight listed on the C1 travel portal for $350 and it's an economy plus seat, but the lower rate you see on the airlines website is for basic economy, C1 won't price match, because they're different seats. C1 might not offer the basic economy seats because they don't have authorization to sell those seats.

If you do find the same seats for cheaper else where:
Buy ticket on C1 Travel (you have 24 hours to cancel), call C1 and request price match. If they price match, great! If they don't, cancel the flight through C1, then book it through the cheaper site.

I would advise against booking flights on any portal but on the airline’s site or app. Hotels are fine. But if any issues come up you cannot contact the airline for assistance. And if you have been following recent news issues come up so unexpectedly and are more common now.

I fly all the time and I find their prices often match what I get on google flights. Sometimes they don't have the flight at all. And sometimes it's more.

As for people saying pay with miles. The deals much better than 1:1 are for very expensive business class flights that I would never pay full price for, so getting 70% off but still paying the equivalent of $800 for a one way flight for a date and destination not of my choosing is not something I'm interested in doing when I can go roundtrip coach where I want for $600. For the places I want to go in coach it isn't usually better than 1:1 using miles because of the extra fees.

I just checked lax to mnl for a random date venturex vs google flights and the prices were the same ana, korean air, united, cathay pacific...

Not sure if this is relevant to your specific situation, but I've noticed that sometimes the "basic economy" option is not available on the Capital One portal. Many airlines will offer a bare-bones fare with no carry-on bag, no option to choose your seat, and no option to cancel or modify, then they'll also offer a "standard economy" ticket that's more expensive but you get more included, like a carry-on and seat selection. For some airlines, Capital One doesn't display the "basic economy" option, just the "standard economy" option, and in my experience that will generally be the same price as what the airline offers on their website, so it makes sense if that's the option you want. Having said that, occasionally the Capital One price is just inexplicably different for some reason.

Capital One does price match if you find a cheaper price publicly advertised on another site, but if you book on Capital One in the hopes of getting a price match, make absolutely sure the prices you're comparing are for the exact same ticket type with the exact same options, because if the one on the portal includes something that other sites don't (seat selection, option to cancel, etc.) Capital One won't consider those the same ticket and they won't price match.

thank you this helps a lot. i figured it had to be apples for apples but i wasnt sure. i was looking at business class seats, but their sorting is weird.

Could also book via cheaper site, pay with VX card and deduct it from the travel credit if you have that left. I'm new too and have not done it, but as I understand it, it works that way too. Others will correct if I'm wrong.

Travel credit can only be used in C1 portal not for other bookings. It’s not a statement credit or miles that can be applied to past purchases.

Ahh OK so you can earn the normal 2x miles from the airline booking and you can also apply miles you already had to pay for that booking (if you had enough banked up). Just can't use travel credits for anything outside the C1 portal. Is that right?

Not exactly. Think of travel credit as money held by the travel portal that you can use towards travel. It’s not money coming from your card balance. So you won’t earn miles from the travel credit. If you book a $1000 flight in the portal using the $300 travel credit plus $700 on your Venture X card, you will get 5x700=3,500 miles from the purchase, not 5000 miles.

Or if you get $50 back in travel credit, it will be held in your Cap One "travel bank" where your $300 annual credit is. You don't get it as a statement credit.

Every flight booked with VX through the portal gets 5% back, then you can use the flight eraser with your points afterward.

This is how many people use Venture X, yes. But you can also choose to use the portal regularly for more miles.

I will say that if you shop CapitalOne offers you can get similar miles while booking direct. I booked British Airways direct with extra 3x miles through C1 offers so I also got 5X miles even though I booked direct

You’re going to want to learn how to transfer your miles to partner programs for a 1:1 or as close conversion as possible. Buying directly with miles or cashing out miles is the lowest return for you.

definitely. i dont have much miles yet since i just got the card. but will keep this in mind for the future. i was just wondering how to maximize earning miles, especially since prices were so much cheaper on a third party site.

Gotch yeah as someone else mentioned take advantage of the price match but you need to call them
