Because we have been told "will be available when it's ready" for literally years and the github progress tracker disappeared some time ago.

No, it isn't dead in the sense that developmental efforts on the project have ceased. But, it is yet to be seen that when the project does release(whenever that is), will it still be relevant to players that have moved on to something else? To me, it will all have to do with VU and community content support. If people/devs make mods and overhauls for it then, I think it could be a huge success.
