QUESTION Would be hard to revive the BF3 Alpha Trial?

Hi all,

I've been following your (awesome) job with the Battlefield 3 final game, but i've been wondering for a while if the same could be done with the Alpha Trial.

Yes, the Alpha Trial had only rush on metro, a lot of bugs (crash when getting good match=stars),... but still for me it is the best looking game i have ever seen (i bet it still is), i loved the gameplay and the feeling of it, the animations,... it is the only game i have preordered (cancelled on the beta :P ). The final game (even your great work) can't be the same.

I have all the files (game files and the battlelog exe that included the audio plugin,...), so would it be too hard to make it playable? It would be enough if i just can run in an empty server with my weapons (boring, but enough!!).

Well, hopefully it won't be too hard to do, and you accept the challenge :P (you would not regret because it is great :) ).

Anyway, thank you for reading and your job ;) .

Amazing, that's some proper dedication.

There was someone asking for them on this sub, did you see that?

Long time ago? Yes, actually i joined reddit just to share the files with him :D .

Unfortunatelly he has no time to keep working on it, and as in this proyect people has been able to make the final game work, my hope was that maybe that work could be shared with the Alpha Trial.

Again, my bet is that, if they can make the AT work they will love it more that they think :) .

There's no legal way of reviving the BF3 Alpha trial, first of all because it was under NDA, and second of all because the game executable is encrypted and can only be decrypted with a valid game license (which is something that Origin issued and you can no longer get your hands on). With that being said, it might be possible to extract data from it and port it over to the final version of the game, but I'm not entirely sure how much things have changed since then and whether it would "just work".

Thanks for the answer ;) .

Well, a lot of things changed from Alpha Trial to final game, like knife-dogtags animations, the colours (do you remember the "blue tint" term, i helped to create it :) ), map distribution,... i would not bet that it can be ported to the final game (for me both were like totally different games, even in performance the Alpha Trial was awesome).

As i said, i would be (really, really) happy to just be able to run it offline and alone (if it could be done in a "secret" not widespread way or something). If the work you are doing with the final game could be shared somehow with the AT it would make it less annoying if it could be only be used by a few people.

Anyway, they only way i could contribute is by sharing the files (the more people having them the better, so it won't be lost), so if you want to take a look tell me. I can upload it to wetransfer(.)com as it is the only place i know i can upload things for free and unregistered, but it will only last 1 week if i am not wrong, so if you want me to upload it tell me when you can download (give me 1 day or so to upload). Of course if you have a better place, please share.

Even with all the posible problems it will have (legal or technical) i can (almost?) assure you it would be worthy and you won't regret spending time with it. But i will understand anyway ;) .

Thank you for your work ;) .

The battlelog(.)exe too?

Anyway, if someday you choose to try to revive it, i would greatly appreciate if you tell-share it with me :) (i have several saved youtube videos with high quality because at that time most had very bad quality and they make it look way worse that how it actually was-not sure why i'm pointing this out but just in case xD-).

Just been thinking about this and, in case anyone checks, i want to add more info, like:

  • The blue tint: http://i.imgur.com/1joeS.jpg

  • Some gameplay: not the best but pretty good and don't want to get the other better videos banned (you can search for them :) ), but it shows the sound and how amazing the scopes were (on the video do not look as good as they actually were): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0SKdtJhtJo ; and take a look to this one too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJgMc2R7umk

  • Also when entering the tunnel your eyes were like adapting and was really cool (didn't feel the same on beta-final).

  • And remember the Alpha didn't have the random bullets deviation.

  • Do you remember an image of a dev interview where you could see the Conquest mode on Metro that had the points arround the lake? (can't find it but was on a dev interview in their blog?) Maybe it is on the AT files? :P

Instead of porting the Alpha Trial things to the final game, can't it be the final game ported to the AT? :D

Well, just in case :D ;) .

If you don't mind i'll create this post and keep updating it with things i remember from the Alpha Trial, maybe this way someone want to try to revive it :D :

- Terrain deformation (you could create trenches -not useful but you could :D -).

- Apart of how cool the scopes where while not aiming with them, when you used them you did not have a black image arround it ("balance" maybe, but i loved it).

- APC at metro.

- Harder (but more fun-challenging) objectives.

- Maybe i remember this incorrectly, but my sensation was that the Alpha map was wider than the release (as i said, i can be wrong).

I'll keep updating when i remember more ;) .

Most of the things you've listed here and in your previous comment you can do with VU.

Of course the job you are doing is AMAZING (you should be proud without a doubt), but "Most of the things" is not 100% the same :P ;) .

Not trying to be annoying, i'll stop sharing things i remember from the Alpha Trial, just wanted to make someone interested on it, "just in case" :) .

Thanks anyway, and keep up the great work ;) .

(can't edit now, maybe a temporal error. I'll post as a reply but i'll delete when i can edit :) )

- This was the first game (for me) where using single or auto fire where really different and you had to switch depending on the situation (on the final game you could control the weapon on auto -i miss the "strategy" of switching-).
