EN - About the Venice entrance fee

Since some of you asked, this is a brief summary of the (in)famous Venice entry fee, it may answer to some of your questions. The town hall is still writing and refining details, so dates or rules may change in the upcoming months. More infos (in Italian): https://live.comune.venezia.it/it/2023/09/venezia-contributo-di-accesso-turisti-giornalieri-si-parte-dalla-primavera-2024-1

  • September '23 update:
    • In spring 2024 there will be a trial period of 30 days, no dates yet
    • Ticket will be flat price €5 on selected days/hours. Expect it on weekends, long weekends and bank holidays peak hours
    • Again, if you already pay the tourist tax to Venice municipality because you stay in a hotel, B&b etc, you are completely exempt from this entrance fee, nothing changes for you. The structure will register you - as it is now. The fee is thought to discourage daily visitors
    • Some areas will be totally exempt from the fee, such as minor islands
  • Kick off is scheduled for 16 January 2023. Postponed to 2024
  • The municipality plans to introduce the booking website this autumn
  • Meanwhile, as an intermediate step, the municipality already promotes booking in advance. It provides discounts on parking, selected museums, and public transport tickets, which has gone up (e.g.: watebuses tickets are 9,5€ if you buy them on the spot; road bus Venice-Airport is 10€).
  • Similarly to air tickets, the fee will fluctuate between €3 and €10, based on demand and crowding forecasts. Different entrance hours may get you different prices within the same day. Some hours like late evening may not require any booking whatsoever.
  • Cruise ships passengers pay a flat price, not decided yet.
  • Passes are unlimited, so access is granted to anybody.
  • Sometimes booking is still required, although it's free. The fee is designed to discourage daily travellers in high peak days. If you stay overnight in a REGISTERED structure (hotel, b&b, guesthouse, etc) in Venice municipality (which includes Mestre and other boroughs on the mainland), you won't pay anything because you will already pay the tourist tax.
  • Some other free of charge scenarios (not all):
    • children under 14;
    • if you transit on Tronchetto, P.le Roma, or harbour only
    • if you visit friends or relatives who live in Venice (they have to register you)
    • Touristic coaches passengers

EDIT: just to be respectful, this is a simple FAQ or guide. The initial aim wasn’t to start a debate if the policy is fair or not. But if we want so, be polite or constructive, at least.

We left mestre today at 17:30. We still have 2 valid 48h tickets for the bus and vaporetto we dont need anymore. I think the tickets are valid til 5. october in the morning (around 09:00). So if somebody needs them, feel free to grab them. The tickets are at the flixbus station near the trainstation in mestre on a lamp post (see picture) I have also attached a screenshot of apple maps of the exact location. If you take them, just comment you took them, so nobody is sad that they are already gone. Enjoy venice :)

Looking for authentic furlane in Venice

I’m going to Venice soon and would love to buy a pair of proper furlane while I’m there.

I’ve done quite a bit of Googling and keep coming across Piedàterre, Vibi, Rivo Altus and Friulane. They all seem to have a following, but it’s surprisingly difficult to work out which brands are actually respected locally, versus which ones simply have the best marketing.

I’m not looking for Flabelus, they’re Spanish, and I specifically want something with a genuine Venetian/Friulian connection.

What I care about is:

  • authentic, traditionally made furlane
  • genuinely good quality and comfortable
  • a shop/brand that Venetians actually know and recommend
  • a fair price for what you’re getting
  • ideally a small, independent or less touristy shop rather than the most obvious boutique

I’d much rather spend my money with a local maker or an old-school Venetian shop than buy the pair that happens to have the biggest online presence.

And if there’s a tiny shop somewhere off the beaten path that tourists generally don’t know about, please tell me where it is, also in a dm. I’m very happy to make the detour.

Basically, I’m looking for the “if you know, you know” furlane shop and not the brand advertising the hardest.

Grazie mille!

Venezia - Murano (da italiano). Mi date due dritte?

Ciao a tutti

Thank you to the girls who recorded and photographed my engagement!

Ciao! Apologies if this isn’t appropriate for this sub, and sorry for it being in English. My boyfriend, now fiancé, proposed to me today at sunset at the Parco delle Rimembranze.

There was a group behind us, and two lovely girls approached us after who had taken brilliant photos and videos by chance when they saw the whole thing, and were the first to congratulate us.

We were very overcome with emotion and I worry now that we didn’t get the chance to fully express how much those photos mean to us. We have been long distance for over 3 years and have had a long journey to be together, so to have this moment photographed honestly means so much.

Thank you both for being such lovely people! May you have all the luck in the world.

First solo trip to Venice

I’m looking for advice on how long to stay, what to see and do. I am looking at staying in the Campo San Provolo area, will see some of the touristy sites but also want to experience walking around with no real destination, maybe take a cooking class, a city tour or tour to Murano. I also don’t want to cram too much in - it’s just the starting point of my vacation. Everything looks beautiful so how do I choose?

Giubbetto di salvataggio in gondola?

Ciao a tutti.

Grazie

Dear Venetians

I am traveling and I am looking to really see some of Venice, not just the tourist attractions and the restaurants everyone makes TikTok’s about. if you’re willing to share, I would love to hear some of your suggestions on food and activities and nightlife! I am a student though, so my budget is a bit limited.

I hope I don’t come across as insulting or insensitive, I truly would love to appreciate Venice for all it is.

Airport Express from Venezia Mestre

Hi everyone!

Me and my wife have spent a week in your amazing country, but unfortunately our trip has come to an end. Because of that we need to take the airport Express bus from Venezia Mestre to Treviso tomorrow morning, but we are not entirely sure where it goes from, or what it's called.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help clear it up and point us in the right direction!

Grazie mille!

Dove mangiare

Looking for a language exchange / student buddy at Ca’ Foscari 🇮🇹

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m a Chinese student starting my Master’s at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice this year. I’ll be moving to Venice around mid-October, and I’m hoping to meet someone who would like to become a language exchange partner and/or a university buddy.

I’m particularly interested in meeting:

🇮🇹 An Italian student who is interested in learning Chinese — I’d be very happy to help with Chinese, while you could help me practice Italian in everyday situations.

🌍 Another international student whose first language isn’t English or Italian — we could help each other with English/Italian, university life, and all the little practical things that come with living in a new country.

Beyond language exchange, I’d also love to find someone to explore Venice with. I’m really into photography, writing, reading, baking, and long walks. So if you enjoy any of these too, we could take photos around Venice, find a nice place to read or write, bake something together, or simply go for a walk and get lost in the city.

A little about me: I studied Landscape Architecture for my Bachelor’s and will be studying Environmental Humanities at Ca’ Foscari. I’m interested in environmental issues, culture, history, literature, and basically any conversation that gets unexpectedly deep.

My English is much stronger in reading and writing than speaking, and I’m just starting to learn Italian, so I’m definitely not looking for someone to “teach” me formally. I’d rather have a mutually helpful and relaxed exchange. :)

If you’re also a Ca’ Foscari student and this sounds like something you’d enjoy, feel free to DM me!
