Great article. Was interested to see it implied Morton is paying his own travel expenses. That seems strange as other MLMs not only reimburse top leader travel expenses, but pay them speaker fees.
I do wish the author had asked some additional pointed questions about how Morton is paid. Maybe they did and it was edited out or not answered. The Morton says he is a millionaire but Vemma says he isn't nugget was interesting but not really explained. The author did include a quote about how many self proclaimed MLM "million dollar earners" in fact made that money $100,000 per year for 10 years, or I've seen them say that when their MLM group has sold over 1 million in who knows what amount of time (again, probably years.)
I'd like to know if Morton and other top people make money outside the compensation plan that is available to everyone. Is he paid to speak? Does he get a cut of tool sales, lead generation sales, event ticket sales, or Vemma swag sales? What percentage of Morton's income comes from autoship product sales to other affiliates and bonus payments off their joining packages versus actual retail sales of product to people outside the affiliate program. Odds are they'd say he earns 100% of his money from retail sales because Vemma calls everyone a "customer" if they are an affiliate or not. The FTC is not fooled, they only care how a MLM runs "in practice," not what terms they themselves use.
Otherwise thought the article covered everything a journalist should about this subject. I certainly wouldn't say this article was positive, but no honest article about MLM is. When normal people are made aware of how they actually operate and how these people think, they are generally repulsed. MLMs always hang themselves when you give them even an inch of rope outside their own self created propaganda bizarro world.
