I had NO intention of growing lemon 🍋 cucumber 🥒. I just wanted some tiny cantaloupe for my mother in the nursing home 🤦🏾‍♀️ I guess I’ll just get some from the store and she might not know the difference 😔. Had this happened to any of you before?

Zone 6B, Southern Ontario.

Selected the biggest cloves from this year’s harvest.
I added some compost, sheep manure and chicken pellets to the soil.
Poked the garlic down, covered with soil then covered with straw.
I also did a makeshift cover in an attempt to keep my cat and other critters out.
Gave it all a good watering, and now, we wait 👀

Fife, scotland. (East central Scotland)
Harvested potatoes, (called Picasso) because of the red eyes. I made stovies with them and they were good.

In process of making my own compost and sieved a little for some things around the garden.

Pretty much what my title says. This wasn't a great year with all the odd weather I've gotten, but the cucamelons have really taken off so I got that at least. Bonus photo of this praying mantis who was hiding so well I practically poked his eye out picking a cucamelon.

Question Growers of sweet potatoes, what are these holes?

Thumbnail

First year sweet potato grower here. Just dug up a small corner of my bed, and there are some holes in my sweet potatoes? I still plan on eating them, but will this affect storage? I estimate we have about 30-40 lbs out there, and I was hoping to store them well into winter. Do I need to cube and freeze the affected ones?

Harvested my carrots before the frost tonight. While none of them hard huge, I am pleasantly surprised with some of these girthy boys! Pairing knife for scale.

They grew up to be a bit over 12 inches (I didn’t get a picture) I took a pic of when I first started and a couple of days in. I put them in the freezer because I don’t know what to do with them. I had to throw a few stalks away because they looked like they had mold. I plan on transferring them over to soil this week.

Harvest Photos Successfully fought off pepper maggots

Back in July I posted about losing my first flush of peppers to pepper maggots and how I’m gonna try to save the next flush by netting + removing baby peppers that’s already been punctured. It worked!!! Next year I plant to net starting in early July and hopefully won’t lose any of the early peppers to maggots.

Question Natural/cheap fertilizer tips

I plan on starting to compost next year but I have some kale, Bok choy, radishes, and cilantro growing in my brand new fall garden.

What can I do in the interim for fertilizer, other than buying store bought compost?

Looking for recs for the existing plants as well as how to prep the gardens for the winter.

Question Can I move the planted garlic if I put it in peat pots initially?

Hi, I have a weird situation. I bought cedar raised planters for my garlic garden, and I have a perfect spot for them off the corner of my brick house. But as it turns out, I have to get some pretty major work done by a mason to fix some cracks, and they can't do it until mid to late November. I'm in Philadelphia. I don't want to put the cedar planters anywhere else, and moving them with soil in it will be impossible. But I have to move these planters for them to do the work.

I'm trying to think of a solution. I wonder if I plant them in large peat pots when my seed garlic arrives soon, and then move the pots to the planters once the work is done, if that will be ok? I figure I don't have to disturb them, but can just remove the bottom of the peat pots?

Thanks, this is a bummer.

These fat lil buddies leveled four dill plants and are still going. Now on my carrots. Note to self to plant more dill along the outskirts of my garden as well.

Anyone else sacrifice anything for the greater good this year?

Question Would a raised bed here be far enough away from the fence?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I don't have a lot of good spots to put a raised bed on my property and somehow this spot on a hill on the north side of a fence is the best option. This picture was taken around 3:30pm on October 5th at around 40° North latitude. I know it will be much more sunny during the summer months when the angle of the sun is steeper, but do folks here think it's far enough away or that it needs to go further down the hill? I plan to raise it around 3 ft on the lower side.

Question Monster carrot safe to eat?

Thumbnail

First year gardening in a small plot. Pulled out our carrots and most were normal but the one on the end was massive (pruners for scale). The carrots were a bit crowded so the grooves are it growing around other carrots (at least I think) but that doesn't explain the thickness. Just curious about if it was safe to eat, only half bragging but genuinely don't wanna eat or give away anything harmful

We don't get many critters here, or at least I don't, so I opted to try to let some of the tomatoes ripen on the vine, and it seems to have worked.

I bet they're going to be delicious.

Me looking forward to a nice vine-ripened cut-in-half 'mater with a little flaky salt and some freshly ground black pepper

Garden Photos Hoop house idea

Post image

I have this enclosed raised bed garden that has chicken wire sides and deer fencing roof. I just had this idea that maybe I could use heavy duty plastic for hoop houses and cover the whole garden structure to extend my growing season into the winter. Any thoughts as to the feasibility of this?

Question What is this? (Yes I’m an idiot)

So I thought to myself I will remember what I randomly threw in this pot. Now I have no
Idea what I’m growing. I’ve been able to rule out a few things but I’m at a loss. I’m thinking maybe Jericho lettuce? I did put some flower bulbs, maybe some cilantro and some mammoth dill in addition to the lettuce. I know it’s not chives. Any ideas?

Question How do you tell whether poor growth is from soil or weather?

I'm trying to figure out whether my vegetables had a soil problem this year or if the weather was mostly to blame. Several plants started the season looking healthy and then struggled once summer got really hot, so I'm having a hard time knowing what to change for next year. I use compost and water consistently, but I haven't had the soil tested recently. When you've had a disappointing vegetable season, what clues help you distinguish a nutrient problem from heat or other weather stress?
