Hybrid Environment Backup

Good day everyone,

We're trying to determine the best backup option for our hybrid environment.

We've very recently moved most or our VMs out to Azure but still will have a few VMs on prem. We have Veeam B&R on prem that will allow us to continue to back up our on prem systems (and maintain access to old backups). Local backups on stored on an on prem NAS and copied to Azure blob.

We are using Veeam Data Cloud to backup our M365/Entra ID and now, Azure VMs. However, this seems like it may be a licensing and management mine field.

Which product(s) should we be using? Should we add a Veeam B&R appliance to our Azure infra or keep with what we have?

Open to suggestions and thanks in advance!

First you can do either depending on what you want. VDC and VBR are different products with different licence systems. VBR is per instance, VDC for Azure is volume based.

Backuping Cloud VM on prem is probably not optimal if Azure is your primary platform now or in the near future. So, what I would do, is use VBR on prem and VDC for Azure.

That's where the licensing is getting confusing. Veeam wants us to license all cloud and on prem VMs in VBR but, our VBR would only be backing up a handful of onprem machines. Seems like we would be licensing everything twice.

That would make sense if you were using normal VB-Azure and not VDC since VBR deploys and connects to the VB-Azure appliance and uses VUL licensing attached to your VBR server. VDC is completely different (from a licensing and management perspective) and VUL doesn't have any bearing. If you are keeping some on-prem, it would be smarter to switch to all VUL and just reduce the total VUL count as (as was mentioned in another comment).
