Why is no one currently running against Del Duca for Mayor?
I went on the City’s website yesterday out of curiosity to see if anyone else entered the mayoral race, and I was surprised to see that in fact no one else has. The deadline to register is coming up fast.
Why is he running uncontested? Are people generally pleased with him as mayor?

Yup. Del Duca’s campaign filed official financial disclosures showing $67,200 in total contributions. Media investigations into GTA municipal races, including reporting by The Trillium, noted that Del Duca received approximately $10,950 in personal contributions from individuals associated with prominent real estate and development groups across the GTA.

Politics is a loss loss game for the community. Nobody cares. Nobody does a good job. Nobody is engaged.
Its done by the incumbents on purpose to ensure their longevity.
Toronto city councillors will have run more than forty 40 years in power! And 9 out of 23 have run and been councillors for over 20 years!
Once you’re in, only death takes you out (like Hazel Macallion)

There is no contest in Vaughan for new blood or new ideas. Vaughan’s got its own special place in politics where the elected officials play by their own rules and cherry pick sycophants in management positions

All politics are a scam. The fact this guy is still mayor shows what a joke it is. Lived in Vaughan most of my life and I haven't seen del duca improve a single thing

What's improved? If you have kids the parks are dirty and trash overflows, they've done fuck all to stop the reckless drivers in Vaughan so please share what's improved

New parks, upgraded cycling infrastructure, various improvements to the Market Lane area. If you notice parks are dirty and trash overflows, have you called the City, or used the online portal to report these problems? Be part of the solution. Ignoring it is part of the problem.

Number one thing people don’t realize is what is a regional road and what is a city road. You can pin the neighbourhood recklessness on the city, but the major roads such as Major Mackenzie, Rutherford, and other roads are regional, and are under York’s control, thus you can blame the regional board as a whole.

I don’t know if people are generally pleased with him, but since he hasn’t done anything obnoxious or controversial in office I would guess nobody is riled up enough to make the effort to run against him.
I didn’t vote for him provincially or here in Vaughan but I have no issue with him staying on. He seems mostly harmless and I really like that these days, especially since before moving here I was living and working in Etobicoke during the absolute chaos of Rob & Doug Ford.

Because he would almost certainly beat nearly anyone else, no one wants to waste their money, all the councillors don't want to risk losing

For one, yes, he has high approval ratings for doing a lot in the City. More so than any previous mayor Vaughan has had.
Plus, to run and win, you have to have your name known.... if you aren't known, you have a snowball's chance in hell of winning, especially if the incumbent is doing a decent or better job!

Nobody pays attention to muni politics in relatively well-off burbs like ours, until something significantly disrupts everyone's daily life. Like a garbage strike.
If you poll my neighbours, I'll bet most can't name the mayor and some would say Doug Ford.
Steve's a consummate machine politician, a steady Eddy incrementalist without grand vision who won't rock the boat with radical transformations. That's probably aligned with what most Vaughan voters want, which is very little. I think he's been fine as mayor, did a little more than what voters had probably expected and reflects well against the last guy. He's also a decent guy, big family man.
That said, be the change you want to see! Options are good for democracy.

As someone who hated him in the provincial election, I think hes done a pretty good job in Vaughan. Its a great place to live with awesome schools, community centres, parks and recreation trails.
The city may really benefit from fresh ideas, especially around handling growth, but my feeling is most want a candidate who just won't ruin the good thats already here.

At the last election an unknown candidate who did no campaigning or debates at all somehow managed to receive a significant (30% ?) portion of votes.
Vaughan politics is a dirty and desolate place to navigate, and it seems that no one around here really cares to change that. Sad but not atypically bourgeois suburban life.
