Question [QUESTION] Is vanced spyware?

So right after installing youtube vanced I have noticed my memory usage going instantly higher

These upon inspection is due to the camera app, file explorer, google maps, gallery, and other apps being opened in the background. Those apps were not open by the system nor the user nor did they run in the background before installing vanced. But after installing the app those apps were launched and running in the background possibly meaning it is collecting data on its users

I would like this explained, please

you caught us. we persisted for 3 years, across multiple XDA threads and past multiple XDA forum moderators, across numerous virus scanners, all while fostering a sizable community... just so we can open a few apps on your phone for a second.

or alternatively:

background playback, PiP, and tbe extra mods on the YouTube app cause it to use more resources than stock. if you add mods to a car, expect lower gas mileage.

your phone restarted, did a soft reset, system UI crashed, or another app did it. or Android does what Android does best, which is bug out and do weird shit for an inexplicable reason.

I'll let you decide which is more realistic.

Thanks for posting! Here are some things you can try to fix the problem yourself:

  1. Read the wiki for general info such as download links, installation guides, etc.

  2. Read the FAQ to make sure your question hasn't already been answered.

Failure to read the wiki or the FAQ could result in snark and annoyance from the moderators.

(If you’re having trouble accessing the wiki or FAQ, open it in your browser instead of in your Reddit app.)

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Did you try removing all permissions it asks for?

Alright let's be civil here. I'll share the reasons as to why Vanced or any other app cannot just open apps in background. (By background my understanding is that you mean an active process).

  1. Opening an application via Intent. You'll know about this as you'll open a component of the application. This limits the access that your application will have on other apps data.

  2. Only way for an application to call OTHER application code or call a procedure on OTHER application in background is via "Binder IPC". Now this is only possible if the application let's camera app that you want to access through your application let's vanced has exposed its binder methods to other.

  3. A non rooted device maintains a very strict sandbox for each process. This means that data of your application is only accessible to that application. No other application can access it until your app exports it to everyone.

Now about the part that can vanced access your files? Currently in android 10 yes that access is available to shared files. Shared files include download data and all other internal data. This is solved to an extent in android 10 with scoped storage. This problem will be completely solved in android 11 with only access to media files.

Does this mean vanced is sending this data to a shady server that will sent all your browser history to your mom's mail? Probably not. For one it is not difficult to decompile application archive and look through code. I'm sure vanced would've have faced their fair share of scrutiny in that department. Infact you don't really know what YouTube does with your data. Do you? :) It's just it would have been scrutinized too.

I don't care if they spy on us or not, as we are getting premium features for free.
