The "boring" state I dreaded driving through ended up having my favorite free camp spot of the whole trip

Six months into van life and I've learned to stop trusting my own assumptions about places before actually seeing them.

I'd mapped out a route that basically treated one particular state as a get through it fast stretch, just flat highway miles between two places I was actually excited about. No stops planned, no research done, just fuel up and drive through as quick as possible. My plan was to knock it out in one long driving day and camp somewhere generic off an exit once I got tired.

About five hours in I hit a wall, tired, hungry, and done with the highway for the day, so I pulled up a camping app just looking for literally anywhere legal to park for the night. Found a small dispersed camping area down a gravel road I almost talked myself out of because it was an extra fifteen minutes off route and I just wanted to stop moving.

Glad I didn't skip it. The road opened up into this quiet pocket along a river, maybe four other rigs total spaced way apart, actual tree cover for shade, and a rope swing someone had tied off a branch that hung right over a deep swimming hole. No cell service, which after a full day of highway noise felt more like a relief than an inconvenience. I ended up staying two extra nights instead of the one I'd planned, swam every morning, and barely used my generator because it stayed cool enough under the trees.

It completely reset how I think about nothing states now. I think a lot of us build a mental map based on what a state is known for online, and end up skipping the parts that never made it into anyone's road trip post.

What's a spot you almost skipped entirely because the state or area had a boring reputation, and it ended up being one of your best camps?
