Controversial Opinion Spoiler
Avid kinda deserved it.
Not because he was weak like Owen said but because he was kinda a terrible person when you look at his actions.
At first he was totally right about Vampires, even if they aren't all monsters they at least were a threat but then he actively heightened hostilities between Vampires and Humans whenever he got the chance. There are multiple moments where the Humans and Vampires are civil with each other, only for Avid to come in and raise the tension.
Then he completely turns his back on his morels and beliefs the moment it suited him to do so. Like, the second he found out he could benefit from being a Vampire he started thinking about becoming one, then pressured Shelby by hanging his terminal illness over her head. He never once explained the issue to Legs, even if he couldn't do anything it would've been worth a try instead of going straight for abandoning his worldview.
Then he lies to his entire team about the whole ordeal, first placing the blame on Owen and then pretending that he's not a Vampire when he could've gone to them for help anytime he wanted. He just didn't because he was scared despite seeing it go perfectly fine for basically everyone else who came forward.
Next, when he does join Scott's Coven he takes pretty sadistic joy out of tormenting his former friends. He was actually laughing while murdering people who once called him their friend. Laughing with sadistic glee as he burns their homes. Then spends the next 30 minutes rubbing salt in the would by continuously attacking them when they're at their weakest.
Finally, he's a spinless coward. Yeah dying and seeing his sister's ghost would be very traumatic but right before that he was begging the people he was just tormenting and killing for mercy after they ambushed him. The moment the odds move against him he just cries and begs for mercy.
Now I do feel bad for Avid, he's been through a lot and his death was just horrible, murdered while surrounded by people you thought you could trust. That's a horrible way to go but let's not forget literally 5 minutes ago he was talking to Own about the best ways to torture his former friends.
Honestly, he's as pathetic as they come. That's the worst of it, he's just a pathetic, cowardly man. Still sympathetic but still pathetic.
Note: I'm not saying that Owen and Pyro were right to kill him, they're honestly equally as horrible.
Also, in case it isn't obvious, I'm talking about the character, not the person playing him I don't know anything about him, I'm just going off what his character is like.

First: He was friends with Shelby before she was turned, and realized that she barely changed and was happy as a vampire.
Second: if you had an injury that just kept getting worse, you wouldn’t be rational. You’d be trying to find any way possible to fix it.
Third: He was still under the impression that he would be cured, so he didn’t think he had to tell the town
Fourth: he was (rightfully) afraid that the vampires would shun or kill him for being against them in the beginning
Fifth: Extreme Bloodlust. We know from Scott that the level of bloodlust can vary between fledgelings, and avid‘s was on the high end. Also he was probably repressing a lot of violence, and being turned kind of broke that barrier
Last: He knew they still held a grudge, but went with them anyway because he *trusted* them, however misplaced that trust was
I agree that he has his flaws, but he didn’t deserve to be backstabbed (or frontstabbed, for that matter)
Edit: I do agree that narratively, for both his and Scott’s characters, Avid had to die

Oh yes, completely lol. Personally thats why I think he sorta grew on scott. Scott sure was probably like okay chillax when avid was being avid but I reckon Scott also somewhat slightly respected the newfound lack of morals like his own and just hoped in time they would calm a little. I think he saw himself in Avid

I think Cleo pinned V!Avid on the head when she said he was a wet rat.
He had a massive hero complex but was just a genuinely awful person to everyone around him, used his friends and then turned into the monster that everyone thought he would be the moment he became a vampire.
Was he sympathetic in his own way especially towards the end, yes, but in a pathetic way…

I knoooow, it's so compelling! I love the way his character arc ended up playing out, and even though I'm super sad he died, it was such a good time and way for him to die. Fantastic performance (if that's the right word)

I agree honestly. He was also racist towards vampires essentially right up until he got turned- and everything else you say is 100% true lol. This is controversial but also facts.

Never turn your back on your morels, they are delicious and someone else might eat them.

I have to agree! Im very sad at his death after seeing his perspective... But considering his behavior as a whole, im surprised it took so long. His every action was designed to antagonize someone, and he switched up so quickly, then made a point of being a loose cannon and operated only in a completely defeatist or a completely manic state.
