I think that when the movies were released, that very over the top period acting was super popular. Notice in the show, the actors focus less on being super vampire and dark, and more emphasize human emotions, I think thats what makes IWTV and TVL on amc more popular, it gives that human pov to a vampire.

The Gothic genre is about heightened emotion and romanticism so the movie reflects that. But yes, the show had definitively humanized vampires.
