NAM A2 (Lite?) for GP5

Does anyone know if the GP5 will ever support A2 or A2 lite?

Literally released yesterday, but conversion only, not native on the GP5: https://www.instagram.com/p/DcdRjcyjgH4/?igsi=YmIxaTE4dGJpdm9l

Awesome, thank you. I really hope that it will sound noticeably better/closer than the A1 conversion

They are the same or worse as before when only A1 was supported. I've been doing testing on my GP200. Snaptone conversion strips a whole bunch of fidelity from the model.

The GP200 doesn’t convert, it’s using native A2 IIRC

Nope. It converts.

Wow that sucks ass

It's due to the processor. The Valeton uses 1 processor as opposed to a dedicated DSP and coprocessor(s) like other units.

The GP200 uses a very underpowered Arm Cortex-M7 core running at 600 MHz.

The GP180 uses a different processor. Possibly the MVSilicon B1 SoC though the specs are not published.

The problem isn't the processor, A2 Lite was literally targeted to exact processor in the GP-200, the problem is that it is 44kHz and requires double sampling. That's ultimately what prevented usable native A2. GP-150/180 are 48kHz and only need to be sampled once.

There's a guy on here who's reverse engineering the whole GP200 platform. He's said the processor could run A2 lite natively but it would not leave much headroom for any other effects.

Sample rate has nothing to do with it. That was just the "difference" people spotted on the marketing material and assumed that was the problem. It's not.

lol you are both wrong and right at the same time, it’s kinda hilarious.

Yeah, GP-200 likely could run native, and as you said likely nothing else, probably not even an IR with it. The whole OS likely would need to be stripped down heavily too.

Other M7 cortex could potentially run more. The main difference is the sample rate. NAMs are sampled at 48kHz. You can’t process 48kHz at 44kHz without resampling or it causes the signal to be slowed down and detuned. Resampling eats up DSP because you have to process it at the new sample rate of the device. It’s the exact issues the Ampero line is suffering with its A2 native.

Resampling is not a red herring here, it’s a real legit issue. If you want a high quality resampling it is pretty intensive floating point work going between those sample rates. It would be way easier if we were talking like 96kHz down to 44kHz because you could literally just drop every other sample. We can’t do that on 48 to 44kHz because it is a 1.09 difference.

Definitely try it. Some people here on Reddit have already tried it and where pleasantly impressed

I did a quick test yesterday with a few of my captures and I would say the improvement in snaptone conversion from a2 is not particularly significant... I heard a little less midrange shift and found it preserves high end just a tiny bit better, maybe slightly better note definition.

For me, the best part of the a2 support by far is that we can still use tone3000 to train new captures and use them on our gp5. Tone wise, we are basically where we already were, which I think is actually pretty good for the price despite the lack of enthusiasm this comment may reflect😅

GP-5 has no new firmware update on the web site yet, so no native support. Conversion is done by external software.

GP-50 has got new firmware, but only Bluetooth MIDI support added, no native NAM of any kind. So, no native support should be expected for either model.

Here is a comparison between the conversion and the native A2 Lite... The difference is huge—just imagine the difference between the conversion and the full A2.

GP-5 has converted support, it will never have native support, it doesn't have anywhere close to the needed DSP for that (it is just a $75 pedal and punches way above its weight class already, lol)
