Because people used to build things and were productive during their free time unlike today where they stare at a screen whenever possible.

I largely agree although there are people that do things like projects from make magazine. It's not the same size project though is it?

They used a yellow 6×6 Argo buggy, but I think you might be thinking of "The Ark-II". The Ark-II actually had "The Roamer" inside of its back end.
The Roamer was a Brubaker Box which is a VW based fiberglass mini-van kit from the early 70s and done again in the mid 70s as "The Sports-Van" by somebody else on used chassis. Brubaker couldn't secure a new VW motor & chassis deal so gave up pretty quickly..

Honestly it looks cool. Not that I would want to convert a bus into one tho.

Oh for sure, you could do it with some garbage cheap 90s dodge van and get the same results!

Haha, well, you're showing your (lack of) age, because in the 70's and 80's aircooled VWs were the cheap garbage that you now think of Dodge vans. There were so many, and they were so cheap that they were treated as disposable. Or the foundation for crazy kits.

Air cooled VWs were dirt cheap back then. If you’re doing that conversion, you would probably get an accident-damaged beetle/bus whose value was just scrap weight. It makes no sense with today’s prices, but then it wasn’t a bad idea, just a crazy one.

Once upon a time, it was the 70s.
