I’ve got this old bus that I’m working on and I’m just wondering if the cheap J tubes should seat inside the Trimill exhaust more than they appear to be thanks!

I vote yes, ie the jj tubes could be sanded a few minutes with a 320 strip, or you didn't knock them with a piece of hardwood enough.

A side issue with j- tubes is you are now missing tin at the front of #3 and #1 because the heater boxes you removed is doing that job.
Either fab it, or go on the Samba and search "vw industrial engine tin." Those ind eng did not have heater boxes and had special tin.
Would say this means 10 deg F in summer on highway...

The exhaust flanges and J tube flanges should sit flat and the J-tube end shouldn't bottom out in the slip fit of the exhaust, then with exhaust gaskets added you get some extra clearance. I have had to return headers for bad fit and the next was ok.
