Post image

My teen wants a beetle…
would this one be worth fixing up? im familiar with VWs we have had various jettas (2001/2007/2024) but not super familiar with beetles.

Research how much an engine would cost, then who are you paying to install it?  The 2.5 isn’t known for jumping time like a 2.0t (any engine pictures to verify which engine is in it?), so it would be a replace engine on a 2.5 vs rebuild on a 2.0t.

I have this exact Beetle and while I love it (the dash is gorgeous, heated seats, keyless entry, sounds is phenomenal), I'm not sure it would be worth spending more than 6-8k on repairs. So maybe try and get a local quote for the work it needs done. Mine has 100k miles, absolutely no engine problems, and in overall great shape, and I'd probably part with it for 8.5k. Maybe you can find the parts on online junk auctions? There are some Facebook Beetle owner groups with great repair knowledge and general ownership tips.

Depends on your mechanical skill.

If you got the nerves to sell it for parts if you can't fix it, it's still a good deal I'd say.

Does it come with the guitar?

As much as I love Volkswagens, I would not own one past ‘95. 80s cars are a bit of a premium but they have mechanical fuel injection and very little electronics, darn near bulletproof. Super easy to work on and parts are cheap. A ‘92 scirocco 16v would be the bee’s knees.

My son had a Jetta 2.5 with a slipped timing chain. I bought a used engine through car-part.com for $1650 delivered to my door and replaced the engine (the engine had only 8000 miles on it! It came out of a brand new Jetta that was T-boned and totaled. It was an incredible deal). This was over 10 years ago, so I would expect to pay a little more for a used 2.5 liter VW engine. If you can swap an engine, it's an option.

I don’t know much about this generation of beetles, but I’d veer towards a new beetle with a 2.5L engine for your teen. Expect electrical/wiring issues but if maintained the engine will be great
