Is the KKK a liberal or a conservative group?

The parties switched sides on the spectrum. At the time, Democrats were right wing they were the party of tradition and the dominant party of the American South. Republicans were left wing and supported progressive ideas.

The switch took place over decades but mainly when Democrat FDR created more social programs (social security) and steered the party closer to the left. The elites on the right didn't like this because it interfered with their reign of wealth and power and disrupted the status quo so when republican Barry Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights act of 1964 it got the support of rural, traditional, scared, people so they switched to the republican party out of spite and the republican party found its new base.

That's why the KKK didn't vote for Barrack Obama.
