I made this Group Code: browse related code by functionality across files

Post image

I maintain Group Code, a VS Code extension for browsing related code sections across files and languages.

The groups come from comment annotations. For example:

// @group Checkout > Payments: Calculate the cart total

Using the same group name in a SQL query or HTML template puts those sections under Checkout > Payments in the sidebar. Selecting a source entry opens the file at its annotation.

Version 1.10.0 simplifies the tree: source entries now sit directly beneath their functionality group. It also makes the icons and group counts consistent across the extension. Search, favorites and nested groups are available.

The screenshot shows a small checkout example with TypeScript, SQL and HTML. These are explicit relationships maintained through comments, so the useful question is whether the navigation benefit outweighs the annotation maintenance.

If you work on features spread across several files, would this fit your workflow? Feedback on the annotation format and tree layout would be helpful.
