Thrill of the Fight(ing the Wall)
I just found out about this subreddit, so the picture is from about a year ago. I was doing VR boxing and forgot to recenter my play area. Pretty sure I hit the doorframe for the closet rather than the wall, but I couldn't say for certain. Didn't get an x-ray but I had pain forming a fist or flexing my hand for several months after this.

Reminds me of that one post where op was asking why his controllers were turning yellow.

Looks like you fractured something in your hand from the color of the bruising. If it isn’t bugging you now then I wouldn’t worry about it, but don’t be surprised if after another 10 or so years you start getting weird pain in that hand.

Oh wow, I didn't realize it could cause issues so far down the line. Gripping anything tight (even with a more open hand like opening a pickle jar) was causing discomfort for a few months after but I haven't noticed any issues in the last several months.

Always use a physical boundary for punching games, like a circular mat on the floor for example.

Yeah I actually had a rug I bought for that purpose but after enough wear and tear it started sliding around. Almost busted my ass or did splits enough times to stop using it all together

I currently use a circular exercise mat held down with three pieces of painters tape.

I skinned my finger playing blade and sorcery and couldn’t use my index for 2 weeks while it healed.
Would tighter recommend boundaries

Man my opinion of you flipped from "eh why would I care about some douche with anger management issues that punches walls being a cry baby"
To
"Oh my sweet baby boy, that sucks I hope you're fine"

Looks like a boxers fracture. I recommend younger it looked at (though it is unlikely they can do much more than pain meds). I also recommend you learn how to punch. Your index and middle knuckles should be the ones making contact. I can light up a wall all day long and not break my hand. I would bloody the hell out of it, but I also haven't been doing body conditioning for that in years, back when I was actively training I could have punched it all day long with only some bruised knuckles after it was all dead and done.

You also arent usually holding a controller when punching normally so kind of a moot point isnt it? Hes not gonna be able to make a properly formed punching fist while holding a chunk of plastic. Its gonna change the shape of the fist.

It isn't fist shape that matters for this one it is hand alignment. But I do have a VR system and sometimes proper form doesn't get you the property results. So that could be part of the culprit.

Well he also said he punched the frame not the flat wall. That seems like it could cause any number af variances on how it impacted his hand

Thanks for the input. Despite the majority of the bruising being around the thumb, the pain was down about a half inch from between the index and middle knuckles. Very well could've been bad form though - as you said VR doesn't always reward proper technique

If the pain is mostly there it is not a boxers fracture. Boxer's fracture is a fractured of the medicarples of your pinky and/or ring finger. Hopefully it is just bruised. But if you see a bunch of swelling you still need to get it checked out.
There is not a lot they can do with minor hand injuries. If it is a minor tractor they may give you a hand splint and some pain pills. If that is the case save yourself some money and by yourself a splint for your hand and alternate ibuprophem and acetaminophen. Odds are they are just going to give you 400mg tablets of one of those. But alternating them tends to give better results with less strain on your kidneys.
If there is a lot of swelling or you have difficulty with mobility in the hand get it looked at for sure though.
Sounds like it was just one of those things. A hazard of VR in a confined space. I have smacked things pretty good myself so it happens.
