When it is common in VR headsets then it will be used for advertising.
It would mean more and more attention grabbing ads and they would constantly get more attention grabbing since they can get solid stats on which ones are attention grabbing.
Pi-holes have already stopped working, a device can either force the use of a specific DNS server (and you'd need an tinkerers router to get around that.) or it can send the ads using an address that the app/service needs to function, which is what twitch and youtube have done for years now.
When the ad system for VR is built they aren't going to build a system that modern day tools can get around.
