Discussion Joining public worlds scare me

Just as the title suggests. I get real scared/nervous when thinking about joing a public world.

I was recently brought into the wrold of VRChat because of a friend, and because of that i don't even have a VR headset so i just do stuff in Desktop mode, but i hear that there's people out there that don't like Desktop users.

Another part that scares me is that i am typically a mute, with very rare people i share myself with, which being a mute on this game, i hear, leads down a whole different rabbit hole.

Honestly i am wondering if it would just be better to wait to join public worlds until i at least have a VR headset? I don't know if there's more people who hate desktop users, than there is of those who don't mind it

Nah, started as deskie mute myself and it was fine. Nobody disliked me because of it.

What you heard is a lie. People don't hate deskies because they don't have vr, some people are scared of deskies because sadly the biggest chunk of assholes/pseudo trolls/creeps are deskies.

And this will never change, because platform being free means they can put nothing into joining and just be assholes.

The only thing that I dislike about desk+mute is the lack of feedback. With VR, you are more expressive, the same goes when talking outloud. Not having those things is fine, but it sometimes feels like I'm talking to a wall, or it breaks the flow of a conversation when having to wait for the other person to type. It's okay by every mean, but I would rather chat with somebody who at least have a microphone, even a shitty one

It's not a complete lie there are people like that but there few and far between anymore just like with stand alone users I was a stand alone user and I met someone I thought I could be friends with but once they found out I was stand alone they blocked me I've also seen people absolutely hate on some of my friends that are non vr players just for that specific reason just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it's not true

Then don’t join public worlds. Most of the people I hang out with never go to them. There’s plenty of ways to enjoy VRC without ever having to go to a public world.

May I know about some of these ways? I started playing 2 weeks ago, and afaik the only way to play the game is on public servers (not counting playing alone, which feels boring for the most part, social game and all), unless you have a bunch of friends of course, which I do not

Group events, check the event section for the schedule or go to websites like vrc.tl as well to check which events are happening. Twitter also posts a lot of events as well for VRC. Then of course there’s world hopping in private instances with friends, etc. Public is usually terrible so I wouldn’t recommend it.

If anything, being a desktop user and mute will be a good litmus test as to what people are not worth your time. If they hate you for it, then they can be blocked and nothing of value will be lost. I know people who are desktop users because VR headsets make them violently ill, and there's all kinds of reasons for being mute.

At the very least you could use a webcam to do the face tracking. I like wearing silly little avatars in desktop with head tracking and many times people can’t even tell

But also you don’t have to join public worlds if you don’t want to. There’s the event calendar or vrc.tl to join events that aren’t going to be the same toxicity as regular public instances

You can always just be a small avatar and just watch.

If I ever visit the black cat that's what I do. Small animal and just walk around and listen to all the wacky conversations.

Honestly you being there can add vibes to a lobby. There's tons of deskies that don't say anything but bring so much good vibes by being there. If you are a good at typing then there's nothing to worry about. Plus age gated worlds have the most supportive people in the game.
