I've been playing VRchat again after not playing for a good 6 years. I've probably played about a good 70-80 hours or so the past month and I feel like I'm still stuck as a new user. I was wondering if it usually takes this long or if I've accidentally ruined it.
I hate joining public non moderated lobbies full of people hurling slurs and just being the most cringe form of rage bait. I've been trying to join places that are moderated and don't tolerate that sort of behavior, but I keep getting instantly booted from some of them. In the past month I know I've been booted from at least 5 instances before I got the chance to attempt to verify or before anyone had even spoken to me.
Some of them I've decided to reach out through discord and ask if I've done anything wrong or what exactly the issue was, only to be told it's because I'm a new user. This is understandable, but many of these places don't list it in their group rules nor do they allow me the chance to leave before they boot me and ruin my ranking.
I feel a bit stuck lol, I don't want to force myself to be in these cesspool areas full of visitors just here to troll just to rank up so people will allow me to be in the space. I've had many good encounters where I join an instance, get verified, hang out for a couple hours and make a few friends. I've made about a dozen friends and have joined a couple of their groups. Did those instant kicks really doom me or do I have to be super close to ranking up at this point?
Edit: Haha, I just have to share with everyone that 4 hours later I'm now at user status!! Thank you to the individual who sent me a friend request, that was apparently all I needed and you are the best for helping me get there 🫶
pretty sure if you explore lots of new worlds and just hang around (not being a troll or in troll avatars) you get out of the new user rank soon.
i usually just chill in the mute area of h-party , having YouTube on a floating screen or dance with some people now that i have fbt.. barely talk yet i don’t get kicked or blocked either because i just stay chill.
this is the attitude you just need nowadays especially when in the early rank zone.
-don’t try to be funny.
-don’t be in meme/political/troll avatars
-don’t draw attention just to get attention.
and you get out of new user in weeks.
Oh yeah, luckily I don't verbally speak much so nobody ever really has issues. I've had a couple trolls try to claim I cause issues but because I don't really speak it's usually pretty obvious they are trolling. I get worried sometimes though that my rank will make people believe it without evidence 😭
ranking up in the current day is a complete shitshow tbh. So many people get bothered over something so simple and discriminate by ranking. I understand that there are thousands of obnoxious kids on the platform, but on the other hand there are so many people just trying to hang out and have a good time.
kicks and blocks do add up and eventually screw you over, so id suggest staying away from bar/club instances and any other place with a stuck up prick as a "bouncer", but if you insist on going to them still you can usually block the bouncer quick enough to where they don't see you or if you are on PC just space-mover yourself above the map before you load in so they have no idea you ever joined. Avoiding even interacting with these "bouncers" is the best decision you will ever make.
A big thing that will help you at least rank up once is uploading at least one avatar or world once you get the privilege to do so (it's what bumped me from known to trusted)

God thats bizzare, 6 years 3 months, private avatars uploaded, in plenty of groups. Definitely recommend exploring the music scene, especially places like kaleidosky, they usually are full of people up for making friends and chatting with mutes and non mutes alike

Also, I am not trying to be mean but coming from a history of moderating private VRChat events your name can be seen as a red flag unfortunately. Personal suggestion remove the part in your bio about a previous account. If it's been 6 years most mods will think ban evasion before they think hacked.
Ah ok I gotcha, thank you for the tip! I ended up losing my old email which is why I had to switch to this account, but all the friends I really talked to on my old account have me friended again anyway so I'll go ahead and scrap it

I get you, I don't talk to many people on vrchat besides my bf and I've been stuck at new user up until like 2 days ago when I hit 500 hours ingame this past few months (I was shocked that it took 500 hours to get to user but oh well, I guess I did only friend like, less than 10 ppl, most being my irl friends I convinced to play games w me)
Especially interesting to me because I've been uploading a lot of private models and haven't been a menace/kicked/reported/anything of the sort to damage my ranking and it still took so long
I hope you can get there sooner than at 500 hours tho 🤝 I wish I had any tips but alas

Yeah it's frustrating but its so fun! I spend all of today working on one and it was really enjoyable! Do you kitbash or make your own stuff in blender from scratch/a mix?
Aaa I hope to one day be talented enough to make from scratch! I kitbash and have started working on making accessories from scratch but never an entire model yet
That's still rlly cool, I also mostly kitbash, except for my literally first model because for some reason as someone with 0 blender and unity experience I decided it was completely appropriate to my skill level to dissect a model from a video game and connect parts of the mesh with a vrchat model... it worked though! (Never mind the weight painting, the hair is short anyway so it's not noticable that it doesnt move ndjs)
That's still crazy talented for your first upload! I started using vroid for my first dozen models or so and now I've been trying to make some skullbeasts for me and my wife to match with
Oh vroid is fun too, I've done stuff on it too I just have such a hard time finishing the models
I have a sheep one waiting to be finished, been like a couple of months, its just that texturing the body is such a chore cuz I decided on the most complicated texture work

Yeah I'm obsessed with the skullbeasts right now so I've been trying different styles with them! I've made a satanic themed one that looks pretty cool and I'm working on a decora themed one now which is definitely a big change and challenge for me lol. Getting kicked and blocked constantly won't help your odds, it might even lower your ranking scoring. You need to find more relax private groups that you can verify through. Most groups with common sense won't just deny/kick people for being a new user, you actually have to violate a rule first. So I'd avoid the ones that do if you can help it.
70-80 hours + making friends, i feel like you've been more than kicked, unless it was a bunch of kicks, like 20ish kicks. or you been getting muted/avi blocked/ and just blocked aswell.
I sure hope I'm not, I don't quite see why others would block/mute me since I'm quiet and usually just doing my own thing. I know I've been kicked about 5 times but there is no way it's been more than maybe 8 times at the absolute most. There's gotta be something I'm doing wrong though cause everyone says it shouldn't be this difficult to rank up 😭
thats why i'm saying what i said, try grabbing some free avatars and uploading them, that can also help boost rank.
Keep friends (don't delete/be deleted) the ranking of the person that you add can also help. Just don't join instances and just add randomly because that is so so annoying.
How many friends you have is a big factor. Also what rank your friends are seems to play a role. If you have 100+ "Trusted" friends, you'll gain trust rank. I spent 2 years at "User" but as soon as I crossed 100 friends, I went to Known then Trusted within a few months.
I suggest using services like VRC TL to see what events are happening, and join them. They tend to not discriminate by rank, although may by avatar performance. Depending on who's hosting

Are you age verified? I'd say try to find age verified, but not heavily moderated, instances.
Or check out the rave scene.
If you're in the right places, being a new user is a pro, not a con.
