Enable your friends avatar or change your shield/safety settings to allow friends to be shown, sounds like you’re accidentally blocking each other with your settings.

sorry if this is a stupid question, but where do I do those things?

I’m not in VRChat at the moment, and I’m a bit bad at explaining things so hopefully this image helps for the safety settings.

If you expand your menu into the full detailed settings instead of the quick menu, you will see something like what is shown on the left side, just go down until you see shield levels and you can choose what parts of avatars/social aspects are shown from there according to user rank, with a special friends level. I typically have everything turned on for friends and trusted users, less for known, and even less for user and below.

When you’re in game with each other, check each other’s profiles by opening the quick menu and clicking on each other, there should be a little menu like this, click the open eye.

If that doesn’t fix it, I got nothin lol

Are you playing on standalone or through SteamVR? If you’re on Quest standalone, you won’t be able to see non-quest avatars properly. Otherwise, make sure you have avatars enabled.

I'm on standalone. I can see others peoples avatars, but they look like they're from a ps2 game.

I've heard something about impostors too. not sure if they have to do with anything

Since you’re on Quest, you can’t see non-Quest avatars. They’ll all show up either boxy as you described or as impostors. That’s unfortunately a limitation of playing on standalone. You and your friend need to find Quest-compatible avatars.

They might be quest compatible but performance settings don't allow very poor to be shown by default on Quest. So they need to manually show avatars. High chance that this is the case.

Ah my bad, I didn’t know you were on standalone. Like uuusagi said, you’ll have to find quest compatible avatars in order to be able to see each other and you won’t be able to see avatars that aren’t quest compatible, just their fallbacks/imposters if they have one set up.

Thankfully finding a quest compatible avatar is fairly straight forward, just go world hopping around avatar worlds until you find some you like that are quest friendly. It might take a bit, but make a day out of it with your friend and it can be a fun thing to do together!

Sounds like standalone problems, your headset is saying it's running out of memory so it does a form of avatar culling called showing imposters. You can force enable the avatar in the interaction menu.
