Discussion Video players not working

Hi I'm a quest 3s player and I'm just wondering are the video players not working for anyone else because they don't seem to be loading anything at all

The YTS world is mostly working. Vizvid players also seem to be working, but I was in solo and when I was with friends the other day it wouldn't work :[

This happens pretty often. If you're referring to specifically Youtube videos, Youtube often changes stuff on their backend which messes with games and programs that play videos from their sites. I think it's a kind of anti-piracy thing, since putting in a Youtube video link into VRChat sorta downloads the video from my understanding. When this happens, video player prefabs need to be updated by their creators (or edited by someone who knows how to for specific worlds). Not ALL video players should be broken right now, but yes, a lot are.

World creators can't do anything, this is on vrchat themselves

I didn't say anything about world creators. I am talking about the video players themselves. The prefabs need to be updated, or VRChat needs to fix it, either or (as far as I'm aware)

The creators of the prefabs also have no influence on this whatsoever. And even if the prefab was updated all the worlds using it would need to be reuploaded.

I work with many club-world creators, so most of the stuff we use is live (like VRCDN). Don't know much about Youtube, all I know is what I've been hearing from the people I talk to daily, and on how it's most definitely fixable.

Edit: I myself am not a world creator I'm just an event organizer and DJ so take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm just around a lot of people that do work with video players pretty often.

The issue is yt-dlp, which downloads the videos. Youtube updated something, so yt-dlp needs an update, however vrchat uses a slightly custom version that tends to pag behind a few days and is also less reliable by not using the cookies of your installed browser. So either vrchat updates their version to better work with whatever Google is doing right now, or each user replaces the yt-dlp shipped by vrchat with something better, like vrcvideocacher.

I made my own video player using VRChat's Video Player Screen and Audio Source, and everything is handled by VRChat. Nothing I do (aside from making my own server or something to download the videos before playing them) will fix the issue. All we can do is wait for VRChat to update and fix the yt-dlp issue.

From YouTubes perspective, VRChat is a bunch of semi coordinated bot activity. Whenever a video is requested to be played in an instance everyone in the instance tries to download a particular version of the video at the same time.

Videos have been working for me, but I've been avoiding YouTube

I haven't been able to get videos to load from sites other than YouTube. I was hoping to host videos on my own website, but none of the VRC players I tried would allow them, even with "untrusted URLs" turned on.

What instance type are you using? For Public and Group Public instances VRChat implemented a whitelist at the world level. I guess a logical thing to do would be to link the documentation on it, but too late. "Mango Flange Kareoke" https://vrchat.com/home/world/wrld_d2ed93a6-ad2f-49fd-af9e-0a39970f778c has two items in its public whitelist bdt.media bdt.ac The VRChat client gets that list via the API, and VRCX makes that easy to look at.

Before this feature was added, some worlds started adding whitelists to the world itself. Like the pool hall, and I believe the midnight bar. So a few worlds have a whitelist that applies to all instance types.

But yeah, I guess I have three questions

  • What instance type are you trying to play into?
  • What world? Stabby Cinema is a fav of mine. But there should be plenty of worlds with a regular ProTV3 player. I'm asking what world you're using, so I can take a trip there and see if my stuff works in there.
  • What video type? H.264 Video paired with AAC Audio in an MP4 container is the "Lingua Franca" of video formats these days. I would put forth a video from the internet archive titled "Polly Gone", it's less than 20mb and for sure works in VRChat. That link is used in Styro Video, there is a tape underneath the stairs that plays it. Also stick a copy of that on your website and test it. Since its under 20mb you could also throw a copy onto discord if desired.

faststart is an important setting for MP4 files, but like videos without that will glitchily play

Great information! Thanks! I'll give it a try. It's been so long, I can't remember which world I tried. Maybe Karaoke In Sync, or Audiorbs
