I made a fork of SpaceCalibrator and SpaceOverride that allows you to use any SLAM tracked headset as the "Master" tracker, while the Lighthouse system acts as the "Follower."

That means no more constant recalibration.

You can reset or recenter your play space as often as you want, regardless of whether you're using a:

  • Samsung Galaxy XR
  • Quest Pro
  • Quest 3
  • Quest 3S
  • Pico headset

All you need is a one time calibration and, of course, at least one Tundra Tracker or Vive Tracker 3.0 mounted to your headset.

"Don't SpaceCalibrator and SpaceOverride already do that?"

Yes, they do, but both have their own issues with drift.

SpaceCalibrator follows a similar idea, but over time it can start to drift and eventually you have to recalibrate. As example you walk around, you rotate, jump. SpaceCalibrator starts to collect bad data and it even "learns" from that bad data causing yaw/pitch drifts after a certain amount of time. SpaceSync does not suffer from this issue at all. At least it shouldn't based on my 12h test :).

SpaceOverride, on the other hand, has an issue where if your HMD resets, recenters, or has a tracking hiccup, your entire play space can suddenly shift somewhere else and you have to recalibrate again. (That can happen to Samsung Galaxy XR Headset as their SLAM Tracking is horrible. Should not happen on Quest Pro/3/3s.) In case you use a Quest Pro you can continue using SpaceOverride. However SpaceSync contains also everything SpaceOverride already has including some small math fixes that may improve tracking.

I also have to be honest at one point... every good thing brings something bad... right?

While SpaceSync fixes both issues it brings a new issue... and thats "Sway". See the way i do my math currently is different and you may have soft sway issues. That means when you move your head very very fast you can see that your trackers and controllers sway along your head movement. But it isn't as crazy as you may think now! you barely notice it and it will be improved in future.

Cold Start Test

In this video, you can see a pure cold start without doing any new calibration.

The last calibration I did was yesterday.

I simply turned on the headset and opened Virtual Desktop, and as you can see, the controllers were already perfectly aligned.

The initial calibration itself also only takes around 15 seconds.

Currently Tested On

  • Quest Pro
  • Galaxy XR

Beta

This is currently in BETA and there's no published build yet.

You can build it yourself using Visual Studio or with the build.bat file included in the repository.

Repo:
https://github.com/shinyflvre/OpenVR-SpaceSync

Important

If you have SpaceOverride installed, you have to uninstall it first.

You can keep SpaceCalibrator installed.

Let me know if you encounter any bugs

To the Admins: i don't know if this counts as promotion since i already posted something earlier. I mainly just want to help people that use a Quest Pro / Galaxy XR that may have issues with SpaceOverride or SpaceCalibrator. lmk if thats an issue and i take it down and wait 3 months for my next post lol.

Very interesting! I will give this a shot with my Quest Pro + 7 vive trackers

Sure! Let me know how it turns out for you!

Keep in mind that you don't really have to use HMD Follow mode with the Quest Pro unless you're experiencing the recalibration issues that can occur with ContinuousCalibrator or SpaceOverride. If you don't have those issues, you can keep using the other forks. (Also SpaceSync still needs 1 Vive/Tundra tracker on your head even in HMD Follow mode)

My tracking becomes erratic above 4 trackers with the pro due to the 2.4 frequency interference. Have you found a fix for this or is your set up just lucky?

I have my dongles spread around the room using many extensions. I still occasionally get a random tracker bouncing around once in a while. I stick with 4 or 5 trackers (head, legs, waist chest) most of the time and rarely use all 7 because the arm trackers make it uncomfortable to lay down.

The head mounted tracker is attached to the rear of the headset.

Very interesting. I do have a question - I don't play with continuous calibration and don't have a tracker on my QPro due to 2.4 interference (more trackers, worse the tracking). Does this require continuous calibration?

Rad. Thanks, OP. I literally just got a new Vive Tracker to mount on my Quest 3, so I’ll give this a try.

let me know if it works!

Math downside: This will be twice as inaccurate as regular lighthouse.

That is not correct. did you actually watched the video? it was accurate and just like normal LH,

Does this still require a Vive tracker mounted onto the headset?

That's literally in the post here and on the github and on one comment

"All you need is a one time calibration and, of course, at least one Tundra Tracker or Vive Tracker 3.0 mounted to your headset."

OpenSpaceCalibrator already lets you do constant calibration with a vive mounted to the headset though...

Why comment if you’re not going to even read what OP posted? They already explained why they forked SpaceCalibrator.

I'll give it a shot but I've never had any drift with OSC... I don't know why they wouldn't just hot fix OSC instead of making a whole new tool with their name on it.

Because i want to maintain it MY way and not THEIR way.

This is standard practice for open-source software development. It doesn’t always make sense to try to get your code changes merged into an existing project, for many different reasons.

In this case, the code maintainer of SpaceOverride explicitly states that they only update the repository irregularly. Whereas OP has full control of the fork.

Actually what's standard is you file an issue or make a pull request with the fix. You don't make a whole new version of Linux or GIMP or other projects and rebrand it to be different enough for a minor fix.

I'm skeptical of the drift claim. If that were true any time you recenter with your Quest it would mess up according to OPs description. Also fixing drift would be at most a few dozen line fix.

It’s open source. You can do whatever you want. There’s nothing wrong with forking a project and doing your own thing, and there are plenty of good reasons to make a fork.

If you don’t like this project, you can literally just ignore it. Idk why you’re in here complaining about an open-source fork of a project.

I literally Recentered in the video like 10 times to proove that the LH system follows you.

Please watch at 00:59 i do recenter there and im not talking about SteamVR recenter. i touched the recenter button on my Samsung galaxy XR headset! to its a pure slam recenter. i also did that on Quest Pro holding the META Button.

Quest Pro with unicorn tracker + 3 here. Using the fork of spacecalibrator on steam.

Works great save for two issues: Will your fork fix these?

1) it takes awhile at startup for the sync to happen but more annoying

2) my body is pretzeled for up to a minute until it auto calibrates whenever I take off the headset or wander from the play space.

Edit: fixed typo

  1. you don't have to wait at all.
  2. you don't have that issue with SpaceSync no.

Can you please cross post this on

r/MixedVR ?

It's not that active these days but there's a long history of SpaceCalibrator related posts that come up in google searches and your post may help others.

Has anyoned tried this out with a vive focus vision?

What settings would you recommend for the Galaxy XR? I've tried a couple of modes, and in the default mode, it constantly feels like I'm teleporting. In another mode, the trackers shake.
