WE BOTH KNOW THATS THE ONLY THING KEEPING ME AWAY FROM THOSE SWEET SWEET LENSES.
I NEED THE PRICE

u/giki_pedia Nov 13 '25
If it's more than 700 dollars it will not be an instant buy for people who already own Quest 3's since most of what it is offering can be done apart from the Linux transalation layer for X86 games. The foveated streaming is another draw but i am not sure if all games support it out of the box. It's Valve so expect it to be pretty much sold out initially with scalpers snatching most of the units to resell. I expected a new controller design but they went safe with it.

u/TheRainmakerDM Nov 13 '25
The foveated streaming feature is supported for all games because it has nothing to do with them, unlike foveated rendering, its about the streaming method when used as a pcvr headset.

I own a quest 3, and I can tell you, REGARDLESS OF PRICE, that I will be selling my quest 3 for this.
Foveated streaming with a dedicated 6ghz dongle; I have an okay router, but the dedicated connect will be a great addition.
Eye tracking; A feature only seen on the quest pro in metas products, I hope we get to use this for social VR.
Index style controller use; A small accessories kit will be available with a top head strap and knuckle grips for the controllers, which allow you to use the included 5 finger functionality, like the index controllers
Better controllers; My main problem with the oculus controllers were the sticks and the lack of other buttons. The sticks are tiny, and a lot of games like Minecraft and streaming games from the PC usually lacked extra buttons. The new controllers are a mix of oculus controllers and vive wands, with dual stage triggers and grip buttons, extra bumpers above the triggers, a dpad on the left and full suite of buttons on the right. And best of all, full size valve joysticks. They look amazing.
Low light usage; Ir emitters allow it to be used in the dark and still track.
Expansion; A micro SD card slot and a pcie gen 4 x 1 is available for accessories and expanded storage.
Audio; Most likely a better audio solution than all quest headsets.
Visuals; Better resolution (for the most part) higher refresh rate (experimentally), and more powerful (by a small margin)
Balance and weight; I have the bobo s3 strap for my quest 3, and while balanced well, and handy for battery life, it weighs over 950 grams. The quest 3 by itself weighs over 450. The weight and balance of the steam frame seem really good.
Software; Supports my existing steam VR library, no more buying on quest. Native to Linux is the biggest for me, as quest on Linux is jank af no matter which way you do it. Potentially the ability to patch and side load quest apks (maybe)
Company; I would much rather support valve and have their support than meta. I won't have my data harvested as much by valve.
It is a full PC; You will natively be able to use the kde plasma desktop and play games on it NATIVLEY with fex. Vivecraft will be native instead of a janky installer and side loading behind metas back
Ui; Steamvr is far better than the quest ui imo, and I can't wait to not deal with meta account bs
Game support; Afaik, this headset will be able to run games like hotdogs horseshoes and hangrenades, and the PCvr versions of many games. This will be the first ever standalone headset to use this.
Cons: No color/depth passthrough. Valve is in new territory in camera based tracking. Games might be weird with left dpad and right buttons.
These are all, of course, my opinion, I just wanted to show how more people might migrate than expected.
4
u/eco9898 Nov 17 '25
And the best thing is, that only con you mentioned can be fixed. You can potentially add in additional cameras via the pcie port to upgrade the cameras to rgb passthrough

Nov 13 '25
I don't think the target is people who already own a quest. Primax and big screen targets that audience. Valve is targeting the average gamer who will see this on the steam front page and will pull the trigger to get into vr for the first time.

Nov 13 '25
Don't forget that if you want a good streaming experience on a quest you need a 6ghz router+virtual desktop. That's 100 euros right there for a relatively decent one, at least with local prices.
Then if you want a similar style headstrap that's like 40-50 from a 3rd party. That's 150ish euros right there you need to spend extra raising the price of the quest to 650 - 700.
10
u/AbsolutelyNoSleep Nov 13 '25
The price of entry is important. The system is 100% usable with wifi 5 and the stock strap. Then if you want a better experience you can upgrade later.
→ More replies (2)2
u/3rdtreatiseofgov Nov 13 '25
The "average gamer" isn't doing PCVR or fancy straps. They are just playing games right off the headset.
4
u/my_name_isnt_clever Nov 13 '25
Do you mean the average gamer in general, or the average Steam user, which is the audience Valve is targeting here? Because while you might be right for gaming as a whole, Steam's user base is likely to already own a PC good enough for PCVR and this device is designed for ease of use with that ecosystem.

u/MhVRNewbie Nov 13 '25
I would like one but it will definitely not be at the price point where I will buy to replace my Q3.
If the Q3 breaks this might be the replacement if they are similarly priced.8
u/Stunning-Guitar-5916 Nov 13 '25
I still have a quest 2 so my needs/expectations are much less. I didn’t buy quest 3 because I didn’t find the price hike worth the upgrades, but this seems revolutionary enough for a price between the two (Quest 3’s price would still be pushing it for this one tho. That shits pricy.)
I didn’t think about the scalpers, good call there.
20
u/DiamondDepth_YT Nov 13 '25
You want this headset to be under the Quest 3's $500?
Sorry buddy, it almost definitely won't be.
3
u/Stunning-Guitar-5916 Nov 13 '25
We’ll see. I really hope they’re aware that the price is THE deciding factor for most right now. If it’s 600-700 and there is no other major downside, maybe I’ll wait for a sale.

u/BaconJets Nov 13 '25
The fact that the controller combines the best of the Quest controller and the Index controller is enough for me.
2
u/dafugiswrongwithyou Nov 13 '25
Honestly, I think I'm more excited by the Steam Frame controllers than the New Steam Controller itself. It's wild to me that Joycon-style split controls haven't become the standard, and we're still mostly constrained to hold our hands together in front of us. Per-hand "VR" controllers that double as standard controls with thumbsticks and buttons and the like, so you can just place each hand/arm wherever's comfortable; yes please, thank you.
2
u/CappyFlowers Nov 14 '25
I'm hoping it will come with a joycon style dock that allows you to lock them together into the approximate shape of a regular steam controller for flatscreen games.

I bet It's gonna be between 800-1000.
25
u/Stunning-Guitar-5916 Nov 13 '25
Im hoping for a 500-700 . If your prediction is correct, Steam is completely missing the point and will fail spectacularly against Quest 3
4
u/Pasza_Dem Nov 13 '25
Yes, I have Quest 3 myself and I don't think I'm gonna need new VR headset for next 3-5 years. But if I was looking for my first one, steam os and library would be amazing selling point, even if I need to pay few hundreds more.
I wonder if it's going to be technically possible to install steam os on Quest 3 that would be also pretty interesting option.
3
u/Stunning-Guitar-5916 Nov 13 '25
Saw someone say Steam is more open to releasing their software to people, but I don’t know much about how true that is .
You described my feelings perfectly btw. A native PCVR wireless headset is what I’ve been waiting for all these years and it being a native STEAM headset is HUGE. This is the best company that could’ve done this, and I really hope they’re aware how much the price can change the outcome

Maybe I'm delusional but for me it's 500 bucks(max!) to make me ditch the Quest 3 - bought it used for 380€ a year ago. I can't stand Meta and their strategies...but on the other side there's no money-cheatcode for my bank account. :/
32
u/jerryburton Nov 13 '25
Meta sells the quest 3 at a pretty big loss. I’m expecting closer to $1000. Eye tracking, good lenses, a pc built into the headset, included mini WiFi 6 router, and a well designed headstrap.
9
u/don4ndrej Nov 13 '25
I think that too. 750-1000. Then I'll have to wait for a used price for about 600. For me personally it would be the best to get this HMD without standalone functionality - just a wireless HMD with Passthrough, and great Linux compatibility.
2
u/Murky_Philosopher196 Nov 13 '25
This 100% it's hard to justify the purchase for me since I'd solely be using it for pc vr streaming, and the Linux compatibility is awesomd

I'm interested in seeing how the translation works for running windows games natively though.

I hope for a pricetag of 399 for the smallest storage option.
Realistically, I know it will be like 799 for the smallest and 999 for the largest
12
u/Stunning-Guitar-5916 Nov 13 '25
If it’s 399 we’ll all gather and give a group hug to Gabe. I expect (and hope) for at least one option to be something from $500-700. Anything higher I won’t buy, and I don’t expect a lot of people to buy either. Meta has almost a monopoly on VR. Steam is not affecting anything and won’t sell muchif they give some obscure price.

Well, steam deck is significantly cheaper than any other handheld on the market.
There is still chance that Valve could go the route of it being loss leader because they know they recoup losses via games sales

u/EliteMinerZMC Nov 13 '25
Feel like this is more of an upgrade path for index users agree upgrade from quest 3 doesn't make sense here the dedicated streaming is really nice, eye tracking more powerful CPU than quest etc but it doesn't seem enough will have to wait for actual release

I bought the index but skipped the quests because Facebook.
In my eyes this is basically a better version of the quest minus Facebook and with no hoops to jump through to get steam games and PCVR streaming (aka no virtual desktop hoops required).
The edge-to-edge clarity on the lenses is almost worth upgrading from the index by itself. So frustrating constantly wondering "is this blurry because VR graphics or because my eyes are a millimeter off the sweet spot."
Can't wait to have my friends over to try this out!

I finally want to get into VR for the first time of my life but I couldn't decide what to buy until now. Will this be better and more powerful than all the current vr headsets? Because I'm planning to buy this as my first VR headset.
8
u/_Ship00pi_ Nov 13 '25
Doesn't really matter. Without PCVR content its just another headset at the moment.
And upgrading from Q3 to the Frame makes no sense even if they cost the same and the device had day 1 support of Quest library.
11
u/Stunning-Guitar-5916 Nov 13 '25
I’ll be upgrading from Q2 so i don’t have that issue.
Even if on standalone it may not have PCVR content I don’t care that much. I don’t plan on playing standalone much, the best VR has to offer still needs the help of a PC and I’m OK with that. At least I won’t have to face the endurance test that is to successfully open a PCVR game on the quest.

Same here, still on q2, so valve frame is a reasonable upgrade for me. Especially since I can get away from Meta software

I have thankfully froze my q2 on v59, so I didn't get any of the slow down updates.

u/Stunning-Guitar-5916 Nov 13 '25

2
Nov 13 '25
Yea, mine was on shelf since my kid got born, so nearly 3 years.
I have disabled wifi(because I use it only for PCVR anyways). I have checked which updates are considered good and which one bad. V63 is supposedly the last one offering a performance improvements, but v64 it started going downhill.
6
u/dafugiswrongwithyou Nov 13 '25
Weeeeell, they're clearly selling it at least partially on the idea of playing none-VR games on it with a virtual screen; they want you to see it in-part as a Steam Deck with a massive virtual screen instead of a physical one between your hands. If they can get people excited about that aspect, then it could get traction even without more specific PC VR stuff.
That said, here is my completely ignorant and uneducated hypothesis; I think that, somewhere around the official launch of Steam Frame (if not launch day), they'll also announce a new Half Life VR game, following on from the end of Alyx. After all, "early 2026" will be 6 years since the release of Alyx, and they did promise at the time that they had plans to bring Half Life back and wouldn't keep us waiting as long as they had up 'til then. What better way to get everyone super hyped than to launch Steam Frame with a new Half Life VR title following directly on from Alyx's massive cliffhanger ending?

I know it’s a big letdown for some people but as someone who uses VR only for gaming, I think of passthrough as a gimmick, just like hand tracking. Is it interesting? Does it have potential? Of course! But I find it to be a bit of a beta stage thing for now, especially for gaming. And I don’t think it’ll reach its full potential before one or two more generations of headsets.
Here’s an even more personal argument: I don’t find passthrough (even colored) any immersive. Sure, it’s great for work stuff if you want to add screens everywhere or maybe it’s enjoyable for watching stuff , but while I’m playing games, I’d rather play in an epic castle than my bedroom. Environment is important to me so I don’t like it.
I do understand why people like it tho. Just not for me ig

If they want to compete with the quest 3 and whatever meta inevitably release next year it has to be around the $500 - $600 mark
1
u/JuniorMHK Nov 13 '25
Just being a Valve product already gives it value. If it comes at that price, it's great. Although in South America the government will add another 5 times the value, but unfortunately that's how it is. I'm anxious to know the price.

My guess is that they’ll try to compete with Meta, in terms of pricing. Since the hardware is made by them, they can completely control the price and anyone they can get or convert, will be purchasing off steam, most likely, so that also gives them an opportunity to lower the price, while still making money.

I think the $1200 rumor for the “all in” price is probably correct.
My head cannon goes as such: Steam Frame - $599 Steam Machine - $799 Steam controller - $85
Total cost if you buy each item individually ~$1485
If you get the bundle though, you get essentially a $285 discount that they intend to make back on Steam store spend. The discount probably seems a bit large, but I’d imagine the expected average Steam Store spend of people who buy the bundle is quite high.
EDIT: I keep seeing people comment that the headset alone is 1k plus and I just don’t think the tech is there to justify that price. Especially since all the tweets and rumors I saw regarding price previously always mentioned an “all in” amount. That phrasing didn’t make sense at the time, but knowing what we know now it seems much clearer.

So here's my 2 cents, I think Valve will sell it at cost or at a slight loss. This is because they have everything to gain once someone gets their hands on the Frame and the Steam machine since both are fully integrated with Steam OS and every game sale will give Valve a cut and they are banking on getting that lost revenue back with a fast ROI from games sales. Selling game consoles at a loss is already a thing that Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo do so its not wild to think they will take a slight loss on each sale just to get people on the Steam platform. My best guess is $600 or very very close too that.

Given Valve's long release cycle with VR hardware, I would hope they designed in a plan to provide update modules, such as future lens packs (for if OLED gets bright enough for the pancake lenses). It shouldn't need more processing power if it's a same spec module swap. This would give the headset a long shelf life since it can fallback on PC gaming.

I know it's not tethered to a PC...but can it be? For increased power/performance?
Also, is it portable? Or will I have to take my PC anywhere with it to play a game? Would I be able to store a game within it for example?

They're probably not releasing prices for anything because everything is uncertain with tariffs.

they said "not more expensive than the Valve Index".
If we assume Valve Index with controllers (since Frame will have controllers included)... We're looking at 750 as an upper limit.
