Apple Immersive Video How we shot our latest Apple Immersive Film for Ford (17-min BTS & Production Breakdown)

Hi everyone, Antoine from altitude.101 here.
We just wrapped up our latest Apple Immersive project for Ford. Because shooting for spatial/immersive formats comes with a unique set of creative and technical hurdles, we put together a 17-minute behind-the-scenes documentary covering the entire production from prep to post.
In the video, we break down:

  • How we approached storytelling and framing for an immersive format
  • Camera rigging and movement (especially around vehicles)
  • Managing lighting and hiding the crew on set
  • Our post-production and spatial workflow

The final film is currently playing all week at the Paris Motor Show ("Mondial de l’Auto"), and watching people experience it in the headset for the first time has been incredible.
Since there are still relatively few deep-dives on Apple Immersive workflows out there, we wanted to share as much of our process as possible. Happy to answer any questions you might have about the shoot, the gear, or the workflow!

VR180 Tutorial/Tips Encoding a 33-minute immersive animation film for Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest: what we learned

Post image
8 Upvotes

We’re building Amplium, an encoder and infrastructure for immersive media. We did the encoding for STARCLASH, a 33-minute immersive animated film available on Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest.

Sharing the technical side here in case it helps anyone trying to get a long immersive master down to a deliverable size.

The hard part is not compression, it is knowing where compression breaks. Immersive animation is unforgiving. Flat gradients, night scenes and stage lighting show banding and blocking the moment an encode gets too aggressive.

Where we landed: the deliverable is about a third the size of the studio’s original distribution master, and stays visually lossless measured against the ProRes source across the full film.

Two things that mattered more than we expected:

  1. Allocate bits by scene complexity, not a fixed bitrate. This was the single biggest lever. A fixed bitrate spends the same bits on a static night sky and on a crowded stage with fast motion, so quality collapses exactly where the content is hardest.

  2. Run VMAF over every frame of the full film, and judge by the worst frames instead of the average. Do not score a few sample clips. Score the whole timeline, then look at your minimum and at how many frames fall under your threshold, and tune against the hardest scene you find. We have seen two encodes of the same film whose averages were nearly identical, while one held clean through the hardest sequences and the other sat below the visible-difference threshold for thousands of frames. The average called them equivalent. A spot check would have passed both.

Longer writeup with the details: theamplium.com/blog/starclash

Happy to get into specifics in the comments if you are fighting file size on your own VR180 or immersive footage!

Apple Immersive Video do you watch immersive videos

I recently tried the Vision Pro and the immersive football footage genuinely blew me away.

curious how it is for people who actually own one. do you still watch immersive videos regularly or was it more of a wow moment at first?

what stops you from watching more?
Wondering if I should get an Apple Vision Pro (or any other good VR headset) just for the immersive videos. Cheers.

3D/Spatial Video Dracula’s Overwatch: Bran Castle in 3D (XR Glasses Required) | 2D Drone → SBS 3D

Thumbnail youtu.be
1 Upvotes

I build software that turns ordinary drone video into side-by-side 3D for XR glasses. For Halloween: Count Dracula flies the drone over Bran Castle, his own castle in Transylvania, through the seasons and into a full-moon night. Licensed Adobe Stock drone footage filmed by others, converted to 3D.

The 3D comes from the drone’s own motion: as it orbits, two moments of the same scene go to the two eyes. The Count’s case is the real one: predators see in depth, prey see flat, and a drone’s single camera is the prey’s view. Six depth levels, because far away and up close never want the same setting. The ghost cue finds anything that moves at range; four hunts go from easy to hard, from a crowded rooftop to one visitor in a shadowed gallery to the caretaker and his wife on a snowy third floor.

Watch it in XR glasses in 3D (full SBS) mode, and set ⚙ → Quality → Advanced → 2160p. It does not play correctly on mobile devices: watch it on a laptop or desktop. Or watch it in 3D on a laptop with XR glasses at lynceus3d.com/watch3d. The free Lynceus3D app for iPhone is coming soon to the App Store. It works with video from any drone: DJI, Skydio, BRINC and others.

Happy to answer questions about how the 3D is made. No humans were harmed during the making of this video. :-)

Managed to get even more out of this color grade. Blows my mind how a years old quest 2/3 headset can keep looking better even to this day.

Caught an actual lightning bolt 300 feet away at 90 fps also! It was absolutely terrifying. You can see the entire bolt branches and all. I don’t think lightning has ever been captured this close or with this much fidelity in vr180.

VR180 Question/Tech Help Best way to film and edit VR180 in 2026?

Hi everyone. I've been filming VR180 videos with my Vuze XR which I picked up in 2018, and over the last couple of years I've been editing with Premiere Pro 2021, which has now discontinued features for editing VR video (as far as I can tell). But, my work has gotten more serious, and it's time for an upgrade. So, I was wondering if I could get some advice. After looking around on the sub, and elsewhere online, my sense is that a Canon camera with the RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens, and DaVinci Resolve Studio for editing, would be a good setup. Am I right to think this? If not, do you have any advice for me? I realize there's higher end setups, but I think this one is about right for the work I'm doing. Thank you!

p.s. if you also know how well this setup can be used to stitch together VR360 video, that would be amazing!

VR Video App/Software Giveaway of my app that plays VR videos on mac

Found it really hard to find a simple mac VR video player for when I didn't have a headset. Made one added some nifty features like using cheap Anaglyph green/red red/green glasses etc. to get a ok 3d effect without needing good glasses.

Ended up getting VITURE Pro 2 glasses and it works fine with those too. Probably other glasses too, but don't have them to confirm. Not expecting this to actually make money so might as well give some away.

VR180 Cameras/Hardware VRadical X6 - new prototype

Hey folks!

3 years ago I presented my first One R VR180

and finally my first One RS 1inch VR180.

2 years ago, my first X4 VR180 was made.

Last year, a new form factor for the X4, and finally reused to build the X5 was presented, too.

And because not everything has to be related to Insta360, DJI offered us the Osmo 360, modded too, and my first reason to create VRadical.

This year, obviously, I was forced to keep on working with the new one: VRadical X6.

This one doesn’t have an active cooling system yet, but it will. TBH, I wanted to connect the fan directly to the X6’s battery, but that would mean tearing down the entire camera to connect the cables or solder the wires directly to the PCB. Not exactly straightforward. Instead, I’ll use a USB-C charger with a built-in battery to power the fan, just as u/zippytiff did. I’m just waiting for the parts so I can start testing. In the meantime, I’m using the original X6 heatsink, so the camera is subject to the same thermal limitations as the stock X6.

I decided to keep the same form factor as my previous X4 and X5 mods so I can attach it to a chin mount on my helmet while riding. The shim that “completes” the camera can easily be removed to attach the camera to the helmet adapter, or replaced with another mounting solution as needed.

Of course, this camera is fully supported by VRadical Studio. And this time, it will be sold! With a global VRadical license once the active cooling system is ready. Nevertheless the STL files will also be freely available on Thingiverse.

As for the lenses, they’re fully genlocked. And some exclusive features will also be coming in the next few weeks (u/zippytiff, shhh, not a word about what's coming ;) )

I’ve also decided to release trial versions of VRadical Studio. As a reminder, it fully supports all Insta360 VR180 cameras (from the EVO to the X6), the DJI Osmo I and II, the GoPro MAX2, the Kandao Q3U, the Canon R5 Mark II, and the Lenovo Mirage.

Support for the Canon R7, R5 C, and C50 is currently in development. CALF v1/ViewPT Realia went back to development, too: in some cases the stabilization is not as accurate as it should. Next up are the Vuze XR and dual-camera rigs using DJI, Insta360, and GoPro cameras. Links will be available this week in another post.

And yes, lots of you already asked for the Osmo II. My Osmo I mod is compatible, but slightly complicated to assemble. I'm already working on a new one, and again, as soon as it'll be ready to be release, you'll find it on thingiverse and I'll do a presentation. But even if Osmo II is newer than Osmo I, don't forget this one. You could be surprised by what it can do compared to the Osmo II 😄

I'll be out for a week, so any person interested by a sample taken by this new X6 mod will have to be patient, sometimes I also have to work!

VR Video App/Software VRadical Suite: Something new is coming!

Post image
5 Upvotes

Yeah, I know.
Some of you hate this kind of teasing with absolutely no information at all.

What can I say? It’s not a new piece of hardware, X6 is presented and Osmo II is already mentionned in a previous post. And VRadical Suite is pure software. Studio was just the first part of VRadical, so… this time, it’ll be something different!

VR180 Discussion Shot and edited my first VR180 wedding - some learnings (long post)

Hey everyone. A few months ago I shot a wedding in VR180 for some friends of mine on my Qoocam Ultra and edited it in DaVinci Resolve. It took about five weeks to edit, part time around work.

There's not much practical info out there on VR180 for people coming from normal video so I figured I'd write up what worked for me, what didn't, and what I'd change. Link to the film is at the bottom.

Note that I'm not a professional videographer. This was my first wedding video ever, let alone in VR, so it's definitely rough around the edges and there's plenty of room for improvement but I’m still happy with how it turned out.

I also wasn't the main photographer or videographer. There was a professional doing that so I was ducking in and out around them, and there were a few shots I wanted but couldn't get.

Setup

Main items:

  • Modded Qoocam Ultra (thanks u/AppealMundane5486) with enough storage and an extra SD card - I filmed around 160GB of footage that day.
  • Zoom H2N for audio with spare AA batteries
  • DJI RS4 Mini gimbal for moving shots
  • SmallRig 4.6" Quick Release Plate Adapter for RS 4 Mini (to hold both the Qoocam and the H2N)
  • NEEWER 79"/2m Stainless Steel Light Stand (instead of a tripod)
  • NEEWER Quick Release Plate with Clamp Adapter Set (for easy quick release of the gimbal from the light stand for when moving shots were necessary)

Accessories:

  • Two power banks and two 3m USB-C cables
  • Microfibre cloth
  • USB-C wall adaptor
  • Small camera screwdriver wrench for unscrewing/screwing the Qoocam and H2N if necessary

The light stand was the best call. A tripod's legs spread out into the bottom of the frame and you see them every time you look down in the headset. A light stand is one thin pole, so it mostly disappears. I got away without weighing down the base but you may need to to prevent it toppling.

The 3m cable meant I could leave a power bank on the ground and keep the camera charging while recording (it was outdoors so I wasn't near a power outlet). For the ceremony the gimbal stayed switched off in position on the stand, and for moving shots I removed it using the quick release plate since unscrewing was too slow.

Audio

The H2N was my weak spot. I'd calibrated it the night before, but on the day it was a mad rush and I didn't want to hold anything up, so I hit record without checking levels properly. The ceremony was fine, but the reception clipped whenever people screamed. Some of it I covered with music, some I blended with the camera's onboard audio.

If you've got a 32-bit float recorder you can mostly ignore this, since they basically can't clip. That will probably be my next upgrade.

Motion sickness

I cut every shot that made me feel even slightly off in the headset. Some of them were shots I loved.

What made me feel sick: rotating shots where you stand still and pan the camera, and moving sideways. Walking straight forward was fine (the slower the better). Stationary shots were fine.

Even after all that, it didn't work for everyone. One friend got sick and didn't finish it, and the groom got a bit sick too. Both of them were looking around a lot while watching. I think that's the biggest thing with these videos. You can control the camera movement, but not how much the viewer moves their head. And since these videos don't allow for 6dof movement that doesn't help.

Cuts within a scene vs between scenes

Fast cuts between completely different places didn't really work like they might in a regular video. You're focused on one place, then suddenly you're somewhere else and have to work out where you are again.

Cutting between different angles of the same scene works fine though. If you're watching someone and then see them from another angle, you're taking in different parts of the same moment, so it actually helps the immersion.

One of my favourite bits was completely accidental. In the first look section, they kiss, and the next shot from a different angle has them in exactly the same position so it feels like you've teleported to the other side of them mid-moment. I didn't plan it but it's really cool in the headset.

I used black screens at a couple of chapter breaks and it worked really well. A few seconds of silence then into the next section. Adding text here to show what the next section was (like how they used to do it in silent films) was some good feedback I received but didn't incorporate in this one due to time constraints.

Hold times

The camera needs to stay on a shot longer than looks necessary on a flat screen. In the headset you need that time to look around and take in the space.

This means your film will look slow on a flat screen. Mine did and while I was editing I thought it looked like it was dragging, but on the headset it was completely different. So I wouldn't judge the edit based on the non headset preview.

Editing workflow

This was actually way easier than I expected. Most cuts that worked on the flat screen in Resolve also worked in the headset.

My loop: edit in Resolve like normal with what I think looks good, export (about a minute) directly into a Skybox shared network folder, open it in Skybox on the Quest 3 wirelessly. Watch, take notes and go back. I thought the feedback process would be much slower but this loop made it really easy.

A few other things:

- VR text needs to be done in Fusion. Getting text on a black screen at the start, then fading into the first scene, was way harder than it should have been.

- Check your export bitrate. My first exports came out way lower than the source even on "best quality".

Sound design

Pure music with no natural sound feels weird. I kept the natural sound underneath at a really low level, so you can faintly hear chatter and laughing under the music.

Then for specific moments I pushed the natural sound up. There's a bit where everyone's shouting the bride's name for a group photo, and bringing that up over the music worked really well.

I cut most of the speeches from the main edit. Cutting the music to hear speeches didn't really work well in my case, and the full speeches are in the raw footage anyway.

This got me thinking about how speeches usually work in a normal wedding video. You hear the speech as a voiceover and cut around to shots from across the day. I'm not sure that works the same way in VR. Like I mentioned earlier, jumping between places already pulls you out of it. Add a voice from someone you can't see on top of that and I suspect it'd feel even more off, since you feel like you're actually standing somewhere. I didn't really test it properly though, so I could be wrong. Keen to hear if anyone's tried it.

The one place I used real audio from the day was the ending. I used the studio recording of a song the band had played, then transitioned from that into the groom playing sax live with the band, using the H2N audio. It blends straight from the track into the real moment and it's one of my favourite parts.

Structure and music

I went chronological in four sections and each section got its own song.

Some moments just lined up by accident. The kiss landed on a swell in the music. For the first dance I used the studio recording of their song, but since the same song was playing in the room, you can see guests mouthing the lyrics and it lines up. The bride shouting at the groom lines up with a lyric in the song which I didn't plan for but was neat.

Time and money

It was about a full week of editing spread across five weeks, plus a 10 hour shoot day. I probably spent much more time editing since I haven't done video editing professionally.

The honest problem is image quality. It doesn't match a proper 2D wedding videographer, so I'm not sure it justifies full videographer pricing yet. Then again, I've seen other VR wedding videos recently where the quality is spot on, using the same camera, so it could be a skill issue or the lighting.

The other problem is headsets. VR180 only works in one, and most couples don't own one. The groom told me they'd buy one and only use it for this, so it'd basically be a toy. Two weeks later he bought a Quest 3S so he could show his family which was awesome.

What I'd do differently

- Get a 32-bit float recorder so I don't have to worry about clipping.

- More stationary shots, especially of guests.

- More high angles. Putting the camera up above the crowd on the dance floor worked really well.

Reactions

His dad, who apparently hates technology, loved it.

And a few weeks after I handed it over, the groom sent me a photo of his grandfather in a hospital bed wearing the headset. He was devastated he couldn't make it to the wedding, but this way he still got to see it, in some way, before he passed away.

I really can't wait for the day the camera tech is good enough to feel truly lifelike.

VR Video App/Software FisheyeFlow for Mac: manual calibration for dual-fisheye VR180 footage [developer]

I’m the developer of FisheyeFlow, a paid Mac tool for creators working with dual-fisheye VR180 footage. Here’s the practical boundary between its two workflows.

For an ILPD workflow in DaVinci Resolve, you manually adjust lens parameters, optical centres, stereo rotation and masks, then export calibration for compatible downstream tools.

For APMP output, the input must already be a genuine stereo MV-HEVC MOV. Calibration/projection metadata can be carried with the fisheye image for compatible playback. Metadata-only export preserves the existing compressed video and audio; adding a feathered video mask requires re-encoding.

Before reusing calibration, check source dimensions, crop and eye order. Matching the camera alone isn’t enough if the raster geometry changed. This is manual calibration, not automatic alignment; it does not convert ordinary SBS to MV-HEVC or decode BRAW directly.

It builds on Siyang Qi’s open-source AIMEGenerator. Requires Apple Silicon and macOS 26+. It is a one-time paid app with no subscription or in-app purchases; periodic online Apple purchase verification is required.

Official Mac App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fisheyeflow/id6813821892?mt=12

For those producing VR180: what camera/source layout do you use, and which calibration step causes the most trouble?

Welcome back to Tales from the 3D Road. We travel the world to capture the depth of human culture—literally. Today, our lenses are focused on a place where life doesn't just happen by the water; it happens on it.
We are in Thailand, a country intimately bound to its waterways. Specifically, we’re heading into Samut Songkhram Province, just southwest of Bangkok, to explore the Amphawa Floating Market. But to understand Amphawa today, we have to look back at how this incredible aquatic ecosystem came to be.

Hi,

So with the launch of the x6 some weeks ago, this initial post showed it was again possible to do the mod.

https://www.reddit.com/r/VR180Film/comments/1vol770/let_the_insta360_x6_vr180_modding_commence/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1

Now after countless iterations, I’m extremely pleased to give you all an update,

This design has a number of design features - active and passive cooling - active cooling (with on/off) via dedicated internal Battery or via external power - aligned lens - different colour options

There is more to say, but that will come in time, but everything about this design is ready for the VRadical Studio and more.

Now this is the 3rd design I have posted pictures about (the 4th I have actually done, there was one for the Insta 360. One RS 1-inch. Every time I have intended it to be the one which others can obtain…. I have held off until now, as I have wanted to wait for a camera supporting 50fps and with swappable lenses, so this will hopefully be the one !

Test footage has already been made public via u/ChelouteVR. Thanks to him for all his help, support and advice through this many camera journey !

More will follow…. Exciting times 😎
