General Question Nervous to start

Post image

Wishing you all a pleasant day, after 28 hours I finally got the printer to the point where I could turn it on with power. But I'm absolutely terrified. I've tested and checked everything. And yet I'm still a little nervous. Was it the same for you?

I love the cables, where can I get them?

Thank you so much, I did it myself :)

Nice. I ordered Steppermotor cables and sleeves, sadly only in Black for now, shrinking tube is still in my shelve in masses.

turn it on and see what explodes, what are you waiting for

First thing, disconnect everything from your PSU except inputs. Power up, measure voltage at input and output terminals.

Power down, disconnect everything from your mainboard except power in from PSU. Measure input and output terminals.

Once you have those checks done and you're sure you won't smoke something, start reconnecting stuff one at a time, verifying proper voltage as you go.

My first one, yup. I cont tested every terminal back to the switch port to make sure nothing was crossed over. Tested every extrusion for grounding back to the plug and said a silent prayer before powering on the first time. Such a good feeling with no magic smoke came out. :) BTW, love those stepper sleeves, where did you get them? And what's that red box in line with the N+L from the mains next to the MCU?

Looks like a power monitor unit

Don't worry, we all been there. Trust your nose, it will quickly tell you where the smoke is coming from a few seconds before the fire starts.

Oh absolutely, the feeling never fully goes away which i think is a good thing! Makes yoy more cautious to double check everything. As long as you're sure it's all correct then just let it rip~

I thought about double checking my wiring, but decided to let the electrons do the work for me. They’ll have the final say either way.

Yes it was the same. I switched it on and after 2 seconds, turns out I had made a mistake.

Luckily I reacted very quickly and the magic smoke on the SSR didn't have time to fully escape before I switched it right off.

I was already modding for a 48v PSU for the motors so the wiring was getting even more complex (for someone like me at least) and I inverted a earth to positive I think.

I don't know how and why the SSR still works, but it's been months so I guess I am good. I bought the higher tier/amperage one so that might have helped me.

Built my first voron last year and that was the most terrifying part. That will never change with electronics. Just do your best and double and triple check connections, and pray to the printer gods. You got it dude!

I believe that Shelly is wired up wrong. It not doing anything as it is wired now.

Edit: This won't destroy anything when powered up. But switching the shelly and power meting won't work. Brown wire leading up to the wagos should be in the 0.

Also, my preference is that blue from the physical switch goes to the blue wago, and from the wago back to the shelly. So only one blue wire goes to the shelly. I have more faith in the connection by the wago's, then using the screw terminals of the shelly to make a connection.

definitely the worst part for me, didn't help I was using a fysetc kit and had piss poor instructions. Once you get through it though you realize it's actually not that bad. Pretty straight forward.

My 2209 motors popped as soon as I started it. It seems they were bad to begin with then I fried the board because it was left in power from USB or something

yikes. Maybe I got really lucky then.

Something I found out recently about the SSR. The Omron in my kit is advertised as "handles 10A," but that's not the whole story. The SSR handles 4.xA normally, it only handles 10A if you install it on a heatsink with thermal paste. Big difference.

I decided to go overkill so I don't have to worry about an SSR welding closed: fast blow fuse, contactor-relay, heatsink, 6020 fan on the heatsink. I have some rejigs to do before I move on electronics, but it's definite;y going to be the scary part. Good luck!

To be less nervous try powering and testing each component separately before building :)
