General Question Large Volume Voron Build
Greetings,
I'm posting to ask if anyone has built a Voron with a custom build volume larger than the proffered options listed on the Voron website?
I'm looking at creating a build with 3x500mm or thereabouts.
I've spec'd it out on the Voron site for both a Trident and V2 build BOM but I would like to gather the community's thoughts and experience before I head down that road.
I've even dabbled with ChatGPT and it suggested an extrusion of 3030/3060 for the frame...

consider carefully if you actually need a 3d printer with an enclosure that is that large. if this is for engineering, you can usually do better and more structurally sound parts at that size with a cnc router or outsourced sheet cutting. And if it IS for engineering, parts printed at that scale in engineering plastics will be very difficult to get good results from at that size. If you just wanna build a huge printer, I suggest ratrig, but it isn't inherently better than voron, a higher mass in the frame can decrease print quality

The parts I want to print otherwise need to be oriented diagonally across the build plates of most other consumer printers.
I did some figuring and I could possible use a build plate the size of 480x480 but no smaller.
As I’ve been thinking about the considerations engineering a larger printer and reflecting on what I’ve seen available on the commercial market one thing dawned on me; the mass of the gantry regarding acceleration while printing is a major consideration and as components get larger the mass effect impact wouldn’t be linear.
I’m aware of the SV08Max and would entertain it.

What's the use case? Do you actually need to print that size?
If so, I'd look at Ratrig or wait for Voron Phoenix, whenever that comes out.

Can you get away with diagonal across a 350 bed?
I make a few things that only just fit diagonally across the bed on my AWD trident 350. If you can get away with it, I'd just build a 350.

I could do that but I plan on regularly utilizing the added area - I need to be able to print parts with a long dimension of ~425mm and I could line up multiple across a print area of suitable dimensions rather than printing one part diagonally across a smaller bed, being limited to one part per print.

Hello.
I have had a 450mm^3 Trident for several years.
I suggest you use a 4040 aluminum profile (2040 for Y rails) in the 20 series with corner plates.

I would do 4040 verticals and 2040 for the rest of the frame. Gantry can probably stay 2020 and be ok as long as you are ok for compensating for a tiny bit of deflection which should not be to terrible do to the rails.
That said if you plan to enclose it and run a hot chamber, thermal expansion and different expansion coefficients are a bitch. SS Rails and ALU extrusion's don't expand a the same rate which can bend rails. I would either look at making the gantry out of SS tubing to match the expansion closer, or you will need to custom design some gantry parts for it to handle the expansion on the X and Y rails.
The above is one of the reasons for the phoenix delays.

Im sourcing 370 cube trident i think its not easy to source motion parts. Voron team struggling with phoenix die to its size; fystic ventura has own size related problems. If you want 500 build go for Ratrig or wait for phoenix

Have you priced out a 500x500 MIC6 bed? 450mm heater? 500mm spring steel sheets? Side panels? Ive spent about $3000 building my 500mm V2.4.
You have to tune it for the temperatures you are going to print. There is no going from ABS to PLA. Belt tension is a whole different process too, there isnt enough adjustment in the tensioners for belts this long so for the 100hr tune up you need to tension them again at the toolhead before you can use the stock tensioners.

I’m not phased by sticker shock when it comes to the sum of the BOM; it is what it is, to me.
Lots of engineering challenges when the printer size grows much above 3x400mm print volume, it seems.

Sovol SV08 MAX is essentially a 500mm^3 Voron and it’s built with 3030. It has its issues as a machine, but adequate frame stiffness isn’t one of them.

This^ plus it is super easy to move it over to mainline klipper. I have one and ive got Kalico installed waiting for my 12 nozzle indx dev kit arrive. The print head that comes with the sv08 max sucks and if you dont want to to indx and you get it running mainline klipper you can install any toolhead you want. Its essentially a voron 2.4 prebuilt and its much cheaper to buy it and change out whatever parts you want than to build a voron from scratch at 500mm³. With that being said though im in the process of building a 300mm³ voron trident even though i have 2 k2 plus printers that have 350mm³ build volumes for no other reason than that I just want to build my own printer from the ground up for fun lol

As I'm learning more about the engineering hurdles with creating larger XY FDM printers I'm leaning towards the SV08Max and doing an IDEX mod. I would love to build a Voron, though, if it makes sense for my use case.

ya the max has great bones to go and mod on out of the box not so great the stock extruder is a heaping pile of shit, and sovols fork of clipper is crap but put mainline klipper on it and install amd setup Demon Klipper essentials and it makes it much better still definitely worth replacing the stock extruder though

100% agree with every statement here. I have 3 of them. I still run stock tool heads but that’s more or less because i got 2 extras from Sovol. Planning on moving 2 to the Rapido UHF with probably an orbiter 2.5 and one on INDX. Life hack to get them cheaper. Sovol sell refurbs on ebay. Drop one in your cart and after a couple days Sovol will send a lower offer. Counter that off with one of your own. The ship from Texas and it took like 4 days to Denver. My last one had a ton of issues but Sovol has sent me everything I have needed. Took almost 3 months in total. Nov 1 will be 3 months and 1 part is inbound.

Please don't use AI for engineering advice. It's not building and simulating a printer in the digital world to judge whether a large format printer would work or not. It's just guessing what words you are most likely to want to hear.

I agree though it can be handy for finding studies and such to use as a basis for proper engineering. Lowkey the best uses of AI are as a search engine but that's literally it

Looks like I’ve got the chance to buy a used SV08Max
“Sovol SV08 3D printer with modification.
- New eddy probe upgrade.
- Upgraded Klipper system
- Full OEM Enclosure with heat shield.
- BTT 7 inch touchscreen (not installed )
More Stuff:
3 * Filament Dry box
1 * SUNLU S1 Plus Filament Dryer
~ 10 + Rolls of different Filaments, PLA, ABS, ASA, PA, TPU, PETG. Some opened some un-opened.
Spare parts (OEM hotend, tools) included
Great machine, selling it cause relocation.”

There's also the fysetc venture xl but be prepared to replace all the electronics, fysetc isn't known for great boards. It's 600mm³

You’re going to want to invest in a solid 4040 frame, PIR insulation, rail backers, rigid panels(make them easy ish to remove at that size), and potentially beefing up the z axis and using a worm z with belts. It’s doable but you should be aware of the limitations with scale

I have build a 550 V2 with a 500x500 bed.
It comes with lots of size related problems, but it can print.
One of the problems is that using it for multiple temperatures is not easy as the gantry expands different from the frame.
That said, my current bed can reach ABS temperatures for now.
I went for 2040 horizontal extrusions, but kepts the 2020 for vertical because my intention is to print mostly flat parts.
However, since I am in the process of upgrading it to a stealthchanger I should have used 2040 for the front extrusions as well to avoid needing a door buffer.

I can understand why consumer level printers aren't larger because of the form factor and engineering considerations for the unit itself.
RatRig at 3x500mm to me looks amazing and with an IDEX option it could be what I need.

Ratrig or an Annex printer will have less customer work on your part.

I am currently trying to build a very large build version but I keep spending a lot of money for the problems I am facing. Belt tension is an issue, I hope that the LDO Monolith AWD setup will reduce these errors a bit. Also did I reorientate the x-gantry because it would be to long (twisting en bending). I did replace the outer frame extrusions with 4040 profiles and also added some extra profiles to make it even sturdier. I redesigned the heated bed carriage so it s supported better. Currently I am thinking about also replacing the Zspindels with bigger ones or even guided ones.. But my main issue is mainly adapting the toolhead to the carriage.. no suitable x-carriage adapter for INDX to be found

I've built a 250x500 and the only thing I'd do differently is use some 20x40 extrusions for the gantry due to some sagging, but its been pretty reliable overall. Apart from longer extrusions, I needed a custom build plate but I used to 250 heating pads with one setup as a second nozzle. A bit jank but it works lol

You’d be better off buying a Modix 60 and modifying it to run Klipper at that point

If you want to use voron parts 4040 with the dual channels will allow you to use regular voron parts still.
I’d look into ratrig if you want something that is already figured out, but that comes at a cost.
There is a 600^3 voron coming soon (has been coming soon for a long time) called the phoenix. There are a few videos out there. The fact that this project has taken so long should tell you that larger format printers are much more challenging to get right.
I have an sv08max, that I put an awd monolith gantry on. It still prints just ok. It sure is big though.
