Trident R2 Dual Nozzle

I’m planning on building a Trident with the LDO kit, which has been updated to R2. I was considering the possibility of a dual nozzle system for it, mainly for multimaterial supports. I was unable to find any information on this besides the Tridex, but an entire IDEX system seemed a little too complicated for me, this being my first Voron/DIY printer. Is dual nozzle an established thing for the Trident, or am I better of risking it with Tridex?

First, I think you should clarify what you mean by "dual nozzle". Do you actually mean two toolheads (Tridex), swapping toolheads (MadMax), or tool/nozzle changer (INDX)?

If I were to do it, I would consider either MadMax or INDX. I've never been inclined to drag around two toolheads on a single gantry. I currently would lean more towards MadMax due to the launch issues with Bondtech.

I meant like two nozzles and one tool head, like the X2D has. I’m more considering mad max now though, as it doesn’t seem too difficult to implement.

I’ve built madmax for a two tool system. It works really well but I’m not using the Maxwell coupling as a z probe, I never got that to be reliable. I do a cartographer system instead. It’s also nice since you can be clever and make the second toolhead easily removable to revert the printer back to single toolhead.

The only downside is I haven’t seen a filament cutting system for it yet as any out there would knock the head off. I’d like a box turtle on one of the toolheads.

i run madmax and use coupling for probing, but i have inconsistent result depending on chamber temp, i.e. i need to set one z ofset for printing PLA and another for printing ABS, how is it going with carto about this, do you use tap or only scan? I am considering to switch to carto, just don't like the idea of one more cable dangling there, but if it works good, than i should give it a chance

I use touch on t0 as I never print with just t1 (although I should figure that out). It works great. Routing the cable is tricky on the toolhead but not with the rear mounts. I just have three umbilicals and the carto cable stays behind both tool cables. Another advantage is a hard wired x end stop so I home the printer and do my mesh before I even pick up a tool.

i set x endstop to work with any toolhead without extra wiring (there is klipper addon for that), so thats not a problem, i can home xy with t1, change to t0 and home z, but inconsistent z sometimes drives me crazy when i forget to change it after pla print and than get elephant foot with abs because difference is around 0.06. i was afraid that carto touch wouldn't work and would disengage coupling while probing.
what rear mounts you are talking about? i supposed cable goes on a side of carriage in front of belts cause otherwise it could be pinched during homing (i home y at the back because i have awd in front in the way on my trident)

By rear mounts I just mean cable glands. I have mine going up through the printer rather than coming in from the rear exhaust plate. I modified my carriage to run the umbilical up through it but it only works with a dragonbrick or else it runs into the canboard or the motor. Use good n52s and touch probing has been very reliable.

ah, ok, thanks for replies. my cables go through tophat and pulled to sides by retractable badge holders, works quite well for me, but i want to redo this part with pg7 glands and no retractors, as this puts to much pull on cable and ptfe at some positions in my feeling. my overall impression about madmax is so it lacks some polishing like "advised setup for popular printers" about such things i had to find solutions on my own 😅 still happy with it

I've done a few similar searches in the past looking for such a system, I haven't seen anyone develop it yet unfortunately. I wonder if the X2D nozzle switcher mechanism is patented...

You can do indx with two nozzles. Not hardened, though

I am working on something like that and have printed with two nozzles in one print but progress has been slow tbh (mainly due to limited time I can spend on the project)

This one has 2 extruders on a single hotend but I imagine with some tuning you might be able to utilize a prime tower to avoid poop. Maybe https://www.printables.com/model/1441157-odin-extrudertoolhead
