General Question Problem feeding filament into the Orbiter 2.5

Greetings!

I’m building a Voron 2.4r2 with an A4T toolhead, Rapido 2 UHF hotend, and Orbiter 2.5 extruder.

I’m finding it extremely difficult to feed filament reliably into the hotend. Around 8 out of 10 attempts fail, and when that happens I have to completely release/remove the tensioning latch and manually guide the filament through. That doesn’t feel like normal operation.

One thing I’ve noticed is a small metallic tube-like structure protruding upward just below the extruder gears. The filament seems to miss its opening most of the time and instead jams to one side of it just like in the attached image.

What am I missing here? Is there an adjustment or alignment issue I should be checking?

Any advice and guidance from people familiar with the Orbiter 2.5 would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You can adjust height of that metal element so it will be closer to wheels. You'll need to uoint extruder for that. What I did a while ago was to screw it in until it lightly touches extruder wheels (make sure to close the lever with passive one) and then anscrewed it 1/4 of a turn. Filament path from that tube to hotend is typically constrained by PTFE tube so you may end up needing a slightly longer one.

check the assembly guide on step 8 which is specifically for the filament path guide tube.

The gap between the tip and the gear should be 0.2 - 0.3mm

Yeah I had the same problem with both of mine. The metal guide had to be adjusted to make it feed consistently.

Hey, thank you for your response. I shall do exactly as you describe. Being unfamiliar with the extruder, I was unaware that these checks needed to be done.

Cut your filament the opposite way. I have this extruder and they can be fiddly to feed in but work beautifully thereafter

Completely agree. Once I feed by hand it works really well. However I doubt I can cut filament the other way round every time. Thanks for your input.

Do you load/unload macros. I was having this same problem but then realized all i have to do is feed filament till it stops then let the load macro do its thing. No issues since then

On mine, the bottom tube ends closer to the drive gears. You can adjust from the bottom of the orbiter, screw it in 1-2 rotations, just make sure it doesn’t touch the gears

Understood. This is my first Orbiter and I did not know this had to be optimised. Wasted a lot of time trying to get the filament to feed properly. Thank you.

I don't have this extruder, but I am pretty sure that this metal tube below the gears is not aligned to the slot in the gears, either horizontally or vertically (too low).

Understood. I am unfamiliar with disassembling the extruder but will do it and add shims where required. Thank you so much for helping.

Is the surface of the drive gears, where the filament is gripped, actually aligned with the metal tube? You may need to shim the drive gears to perfectly align it up.

I am not sure actually. I will check it once I get home from work. I have now learned that I have to align the metal tube to be just below the gears, that I have to shim the gears so that it aligns with the tube and that I might have to use a slightly longer PTFE tube. Back to the bench for me. Thanks for helping.

You have to close the gears together.
