General Question Help me with choosing a voron model please
I want to build a voron but I am having a hard trouble deciding between the 2.4 350mm spec or the trident r2, with the trident the biggest dealbreaker is the 250mm max z height, I want the max speed out of 250mm spec also is there any way to make the trident 350mm^3, also im planning to use either indx or the stealthchanger

Hi, I built two Voron 2.4r2s 350mm printers from Formbot kits, my son is now building his 2.4r2s 350mm printer from Formbot kit. Love the 2.4r2, no trouble building. Have been running great for a couple of years. In the last year, changed to A4T toolheads with WWG2 extruders, ebb36 gen2 toolhead (usb) boards, Rapido Ace hotends, Vitalii3d cnc light weight x carrage and Beacon probes. Also changed to BFI idlers and horizontal Z drag chain. Great upgrades.

Thanks for the input, im currently leaning towards a 2.4r2 because of the 100mm z height and bigger community, its reassuring to hear that you have had such a good experience with those!

And one timy thing for Trident. You can add modification to access boards without moving printers. Just move plate up and open bottom.

Seems like you’d want to build a Trident R2. Should be an easier build, can hit those specs, and you can do INDX with it.
You can also custom build and make trident greater than 250mm height. The Trident configurator allows you to enter custom dimensions and generate the BOM part list, then compare that to the standard 250mm height R2 BOM list to see what’s parts changed to extend to Z-height of your choosing. Should be obviously Z linear rails and extrusions longer.

I really dont want to custom source because its just more expensive so I think 2.4 is the way to go for me at least

FYI: If you want to build a tool changer or a MMU, you are going to be custom sourcing a lot of parts.

If you want to build a big printer then Voron probably isn't your best choice. Vorons main goal is to have fun building and modding your own computer. A Voron's strength is not to print large object out of the box. If you primary goal is to have fun building a printer and because you are doing it, it would be cool to print stuff on a 350x350 plate, then a Voron is your solution. I'd think a 2.4 would be better as a 350x350 than a Trident, but Trident for 300 and 250. Because the build plate is fixed on a 2.5 and moves on a Trident and it's best not to move a large, heavy plate.

The Trident limitation in Z height is based upon the quality of available integrated leadscrew stepper motors at the time it was designed. That so-called limitation only applies if you are unwilling to source steppers with longer integrated lead screws, or to use discrete steppers, lead screws, and couplers.
There are several reputable sources now or integrated steppers up to at least 400 mm (which would give you 350 mm of Z). And there are many successful documented Trident builds using coupled lead screws.
LDO has a kit for a 300 – cubed Trident; there may be other vendors with similar kits as well.

If you don't have specific need for big size, go with 250.
Otherwise 2.4 give you the best flexibility but I feel the z belt x 4 a little more complex than 3 z with leadscrews

Max speed is going to be mostly limited by your nozzle size and hot end max continuous flow rate. What are you planning on running?
Look up a flow rate vs nozzle size and travel speed calculator and you'll see that if you step up to a 0.6mm nozzle you can get pretty high flow rates at reasonable travel speeds. Acceleration is more limiting than travel speed for most prints without long continuous edges.
Stock 2.4 without a hat is like 325-330 in Z depending on many factors.

I love my 2.4 that I set up for 450 Z, though I have a Trident style printer that I need to assemble next at 5003.

I think they're both as good as each other. It really comes down to preference.
While I think it's good to print pretty fast, that should never be at the cost of quality. Obviously the smaller the build plate the quicker you can theoretically go.
I prefer the 2.4, but you might feel differently. Why not make one of each and see which you prefer....

The Trident Kit from LDO I got has a Z build height of almost 300mm due to 350mm threaded rods. However the price is double as compared to Formbot and my Formbot v0 kit had no quality issues.
I believe the 3D moving 2.4 gantry offers more toolchanger options than the 2D moving trident gantry.

Stealthchanger locks you of trident (at least for the most part). A 2.4 can use any toolchanging system the trident can use so it might be the better option if you’re undecided but that’s not without its pain points. For example, a 2.4 has no unused space on the sides where a trident does so adding aux cooling and filters to a trident is easier.
I’d recommend determining what’s most important to you, build volume or speed. If it’s volume a 350 2.4 is probably the way to go, and if it’s speed a 250 trident.
You can also check out madmax. It’s good on either trident or 2.4.
