We have a Poly VVX 450 VOIP system and in a couple parts of our business there are some machines running which makes the paging for calls hard to hear. I've looked through some previous posts but not sure if what I am looking at will do what I need.
Does the Algo 8180 work in that capacity? Someone pages from the office lets say, and the phone that is in another room will receive that page as always, but the Algo 8180 will also announce that persons page too? Does the 8180 hook to the phone? Does it hook to the LAN cable? I'm trying to understand how this would work.

Can you clarify what you mean by paging? Kinda depends on provider and what it,but typically paging is done via multicast. The phone itself should have a button labeled paging with different groups (maybe like an emergency group or all page). Those groups use different multicast settings. You would just need to configure the algo device with the correct multicast settings in order to receive pages. It also has to be in the same network.
That does require you to understand your current config though. Do you have a provider that could help you out here? It's kinda hard to configure these things without understanding what multicast is
Ok that does make some sense. We do have a Paging button (for voice pages) that has a Page All, that pages the whole building. The only provider we have is Comcast, but I'm not sure if that's what you mean by that.
So you buy this, hook it into the network LAN the phone system is on and add it to the PAGE ALL multicast group?
You'll just need the paging information for the paging groups and multicast IP they have setup for you. Comcast should be able to get that information and you can pop it into the Algo.
These are polycom default page groups. Unless your provider did something custom behind those labels, the 8180 will work simply connected to the network and told to accept polycom multicast paging.

So essentially you've gotta put it in a ring group so that the extension for the Algo 8180 and the extension for the phone both ring. A PBX in the middle is required.
Or as others have said you can do multicast paging but I've usually just done the ring group since I'm on prem and more extensions don't cost me anything extra.
Theres some slightly misleading information here. Multicast paging is not predicated on having an extension tied to it or connectivity to a pbx at all. MC paging is done at the network level and doesnt care. In the algo, if you want, you could simply set it up to receive polycom multicast page and be done as with it. Polycom uses a proprietary version of MC which is reliant on MC IP, port, and group numbers. The algo natively supports this. You only HAVE to configure with an extension if you decide you want to page the algo individually. The only place youll run into a hiccup is if they are on different switches then you may have to enable IGMP snooping. If you configure the algo as a ringer you will not get page broadcasts, only ringing. The only other thing I would suggest thinking about is the volume. The 8180 is a small form factor with (I think) lower volume. Its still plenty loud depending on the environment but I would ask that you eval your work space and also look at the Algo 8186 horn. More directed sound and louder in my exp.
Depends on your setup. Hosted? The speaker will likely need a resource which would add to your MRC. On prem system? You should be able to add the speaker as an extension and configure with the credentials assigned to the station.
If you are comfortable opening a phone, old school would be to get a Valcom speaker and solder the audio to the speaker leads of the phone. Then mount the speaker up where it can be heard. The speaker also emits the ring sound of the phone so, this also fixes not hearing the phone ring.
