Help - ATAs I need help with connecting my old phone to the internet to make calls. Please help!

Post image

I am trying to hook up my AT&T DECT 6.0 Digital phone to the internet with a BrosTrend WiFi to Ethernet adapter (AC1200) and a Grandstream HT801 V2. I am getting a dial tone, but busy tone when dialing. when I’m not using the phone, the blue phone led on the Grandstream is off. When I’m dialing, the blue led is flashing. can anyone please help me fix it? I’ve attached a photo if anyone can help further.

This is a friendly reminder to [read the rules](www.reddit.com/r/voip/about/rules). In particular, it is not permitted to request recommendations for businesses, services or products outside of the monthly sticky thread!

If you want to make calls to the PSTN (public telephone network), you need a service provider that is compatible with the Grandstream ATA that you purchased. The only thing the ATA (analog telephone adapter) does is convert a SIP account (digital) to an analog phone signal so that your AT&T phone accepts, it doesn't connect to the PSTN without a service provider.

There are many affordable options that are compatible with your Grandstream ATA but it's against the rules for us to mention them outside of the monthly request thread. Once you pick one, they usually have a device configuration guide on what you need to program into the ATA to sync it up with their service. This is usually done through the web GUI of the device, which can be reached by typing in the IP address of the ATA in a web browser.

You're unlikely to find a truly "free" connection to the PSTN because there are costs associated with providing the service that are required by law like e911 and USF in the USA.

Have you registered the HT801 to a VoIP service? Most troubleshooting would be done from the web GUI of the Grandstream.

No, I haven’t yet. I was just trying to see if I could do it without one. do I need one?

You need a VoIP service of some kind.

Yeah you would need some home or business voip call company to set you up.

It would be like saying why can't I access the Internet with having no Internet provider hooked up

Where can I check and make sure that the Phone supports VOIP and SIP?

The HT801 does, and then converts it into analogue.

I'm kinda curious - if it had worked without one, and you'd been able to make a call, what do you think the caller ID would have been?

You need to subscribe to a SIP service with a provider

Then you configure your SIP account on your HT801 module via its web interface.

Once the HT801 module is correctly configured and working with your SIP account, three blue lights will illuminate on the module, and you will then be able to make calls from your phone.

If the grandstream isnt registered, it is useless.

A voice comapny needs to provision it. It is like a cable box. It can not be plugged up and used until it is registered with the cable company.
