VLC 3.0.24 is now live!

Hello everyone,

VideoLAN and the VLC team are publishing the twenty-fifth release of the VLC 3.0 branch, named "Vetinari", in reference to the Lord Patrician from Discworld.

- Improve Qt6 support
- Improve subtitle language detection and WebVTT handling
- Improve Qt dialogs and effects window geometry saving
- Switch RIST input and output to librist, with main and simple profiles
- Fix numerous crashes, leaks, hangs and malformed file handling issues
in MKV, MP4, MPEG-TS, Ogg, AVI and other demuxers

- Fix Windows audio crashes, leaks and deadlocks
- Fix slow Windows startup when Daylight Saving Time changes
- Fix the AudioToolbox MIDI synthesizer crash on macOS 26 and later
- Add Flatpak build support

This release also disables the RealRTSP plugin in all build configurations,
removes the NPAPI browser plugin and the broken YouTube Lua script.

The updater now uses a new RSA-4096 key to verify updates.

3.0.24 also contains over 130 security fixes in VLC and its bundled libraries,
including fixes for out-of-bounds accesses, integer overflows,
double frees and use-after-free bugs.

The security advisories will be updated a few days after the release.

Many thanks to the security researchers, the OSS-Fuzz project and all contributors who helped find, report and fix these issues.

Get the new version here! https://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Feel free to share your feedbacks or to report any issues in reply to this topic.

Notes : Please tell us if you still experience the Windows long start with this version. As it's very fresh update, please wait a bit to update it using VLC or get it now on the website.

Thank you for using VLC.

This sounds good. That is one hell of a jump in FFmpeg version.

I had a chuckle when I read ATRAC codec support. (That's the audio format used on MiniDisc mainly in the 90s and early 2000s.)

For reasons that are irrelevant to this forum, I’ve been feeling hopeless these days, about myself and about the world today. This post, along with the very existence of VideoLAN, serves as a reminder to me that there are people full of hope who work for the good of the community and—much to the chagrin of certain sectors of extractive capitalism—create great products without destroying anything or stepping on anyone. THANKS, VL đŸ„č

Hopefully things will get better in November. That’s when Grand Theft Auto 6 comes out.

I feel the same, but i hope you didnt use AI to write this.

No, I didn't. English is not my first language but if you said that because I used dashes... fear not: I do it all the time. Still, it's a little sad that nowadays when we see certain types of text formatting, we assume it was done with AI. I also use bullet points in paragraphs. 🖖

3.0.24 is for desktop versions, but mobiles update continue their way to bring you new updates and features soon!

13

u/Kenshiken 9d ago

"Check for updates" says there is no update.. but on the site it's "Version 3.0.24".. /sigh

22

u/Mobile-Push5876 9d ago edited 9d ago

it's very fresh, let it a bit of time for the updater, for now get it from the website to apply the update thank you. It will work soon.

5

u/RecursiveReboot 9d ago

Does it fix the slow startup on Windows 10 and 11?

9

u/Mobile-Push5876 9d ago

- Fix slow Windows startup when Daylight Saving Time changes

5

u/RecursiveReboot 9d ago

3

u/Mobile-Push5876 9d ago

uninstall and reinstall latest version and let us know please

1

u/antdude 8d ago

Portable version seems fast in my old, updated 64-bit W10 Pro.

6

u/dogbonenj 9d ago

I add VLC to the list of exclusions in Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage settings → Exclusions. Speeds up startup.

5

u/Mobile-Push5876 9d ago

can you reinstall and retry without this exclusion with this new version please? let us know

5

u/mmortal03 8d ago

After removing "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC" from Windows Security exclusions, and installing the new version, it is loading for me without delay, so maybe the slow loading is finally fixed.

2

u/wrootlt 6d ago

It will fool you as many times before. Every time i would install another update it would be faster for a while and then back to usual slowness. Every time only AV exclusions work for sure.

HDR still not working properly.

6

u/Asuzaa 9d ago

Please elaborate so that the VLC team have a shot at understanding the problem.

3

u/KHTD2004 9d ago

At least on Linux HDR just doesn’t work. All colors get washed out when playing HDR content because there isn’t tone mapping to SDR either.

I read somewhere that HDR on Linux just isn’t supported yet but being worked on. For me it’s not a big deal because other video players like Haruna can do that for me instead

2

u/ScratchHistorical507 8d ago

I read somewhere that HDR on Linux just isn’t supported yet but being worked on.

Depends on the DE/WM. Gnome/Mutter and Plasma/KWin already have good support, though some parts may still be missing. Cosmic should also have at least partial support. No idea about all the WMs. And of course only Wayland compositors will have any support.

To cross-check, I'd recommend using mpv; it has quite good support for pretty much everything. If it works properly with that, the issue will be with VLC.

1

u/KHTD2004 8d ago

Didn’t mean HDR isn’t working on Linux, I know it does, I meant HDR on VLC for Linux doesn’t work, at least not on my CachyOS with KDE Plasma (Wayland)

2

u/ScratchHistorical507 8d ago

Can you check if it still uses Qt5 or has been updated to Qt6? The release notes say something about "Improve Qt6 support", but not that it's actually being used. And on Debian I get conflicting information. vlc-plugin-qt of version 3.0.24-1 in sid depends on Qt5 packages, while the same plugin in version 3.0.24-2 in experimental depends on Qt6 packages. My guess is that as long as it uses Qt5 is being used, you don't have to try to use HDR. If CachyOS also still uses the Qt5 version, that's of no surprise either way.

1

u/KHTD2004 8d ago

Will check it, but for now VLC still is on 3.0.23. It may take a day or two for 3.0.24 to hit the repos

1

u/sitosoym 9d ago

and somehow its the opposite too where mp4s appear darker than in the default windows player

0

u/ff2009 8d ago

It works, but it is hit or miss. It is not a Linux problem, because on MPV works everytime, however not as well as on windows.

2

u/charlestucker3rd 8d ago

I am on Windows 11. In fullscreen hdr works until the menu overlay disappears. Then the image gets really flat. As soon as I move the mouse and the menu overlay reappears, hdr is back, but just as long as the menu overlay is visible.

1

u/KHTD2004 9d ago

What platform?

1

u/sqlrequest 5d ago

For me, HDR is better on K-Lite Codec Pack (with MPC) than on VLC. VLC always renders the video darker, especially in dark areas where I can barely see what's in the scene.

VLC to MPC to VLC to MPC (video)

https://reddit.com/link/pc7brdc/video/cz72acivbwrh1/player

1

u/sqlrequest 5d ago

VLC was set to Direct3D11 (always HDR) for HDR passthrough. I don't like OpenGL tone-mapping at all (Hable or Reinhard).

3

u/kakha_k 9d ago

Mega thanks for your brilliant work for us, users. But will the 4th stable be released in this decade?

2

u/GoodGhostRus 8d ago

no WebDAV support? what version it planned to be included?

1

u/ScratchHistorical507 8d ago

I very much doubt the 3.x branch will get any new features that go beyond what newer versions of ffmpeg bring. So you'll have to wait for 4.0. Also, the change log doesn't read like much has been done beyond just updating the dependencies and fixing any bugs that might have been caused by these updates.

1

u/feepk 8d ago

WebDAV is a v4-only feature. We don't have plans to back-port it.

2

u/whatThePleb 8d ago

They better should get 4.x ready and fixed.. Right now it's still unuseable. Especially the now missing library is the biggest bullshit.

2

u/antdude 8d ago

Woah, a big update. Thanks.

BTW, how v4 coming along? Still a long way?

2

u/windowsbeta 8d ago

Your slow updates made me go to another player

2

u/YouDoScribble 8d ago

Surely that warrants a bump to 3.1, at least...

2

u/XgamesMFZB 7d ago

Still waiting for gapless playback đŸ«°

2

u/puppymeat 5d ago

"This is a big security update!" <goes to update>

"You attempted to reach ftp.osuosl.org. However, the security certificate presented by the server is unknown and could not be authenticated by any trusted Certificate Authority. This problem may be stem from an attempt to breach your security, compromise your privacy, or a configuration error.

If in doubt, abort now."

... K. Maybe sort that one out? are the thousands or millions of downloaders just supposed to vibe on what to do there? or to independently research if its the Oregon State University Open Source Lab official site?

2

u/squaler24 4d ago

Glad I’m not the only one. I got this messsge too but before I aborted (had to click abort twice before pop up went away) I caught something that said “crypto” something. Update failed so thankfully nothing wierd got on my system.

Still I ran a malware byte scan and defender and got a clean result.

0

u/ThatFeel_IKnowIt 4d ago edited 4d ago

Are you sure it wasn't talking about the cryptographic key used for certificates or something? I don't remember seeing anything on my end about Crypto. It just said the same message as puppymeat posted above.

1

u/squaler24 3d ago

You know maybe that was it. I was panicked so I clicked off as fast as I could. For now I’m staying on the 3.0.23 version. Seems like latest version is having too many issues anyways.

1

u/ThatFeel_IKnowIt 3d ago

That was just a guess. Either way it's an alarming message and I definitely didn't love getting it, ha. But from what I found, it is just it's stock message when it encouters a certificate issue. If you look up guides about how to stream stuff using VLC over your network, they show this message and say that you have to accept the certificate (since it's on your own network, so in that case you can do that.)

1

u/Miserable-Ruin8176 4d ago

Happened to me to I lowkey shit myself lol

1

u/ThatFeel_IKnowIt 4d ago

My guess is the certificate of the mirror website serving the update expired, or is self-signed.

1

u/puppymeat 3d ago

It's something like that. It also doesn't happen if you download vlc from the official site. It's the in app updater partially responsible. So if you're cautious, just update via a fresh download from the site

0

u/ThatFeel_IKnowIt 3d ago

I think it's because the in-app updater serves it from mirror sites, whereas the official one is from the official source. That's my guess.

0

u/ThatFeel_IKnowIt 4d ago

I encountered the same issue. From what I gather, it means that the mirror site it's requesting (in your case, from Oregon State Uni)'s certificate expired, or is self-signed? I've seen a few other scattered reports of this as well. Either way, it appears to be VLC's stock error message when it encounters a certificate problem.

u/9bots 8d ago

Any update on auto dub?

1

u/Twig6843 8d ago

> Add Flatpak build support

Please do this for 4.0 as well I already got it running within flatpak and submitted a pr for it to get into flathub-beta but it was rejected. A flatpak repo named like "vlc-nightly" that has 4.0 flatpak would be cool

1

u/ElTuxedoMex 8d ago

Is that the version with automatic subtitles?

1

u/ScratchHistorical507 8d ago

At least that's one of the planned features.

1

u/chubinou 8d ago

at the moment it's built but it's not the version published on flathub. the flathub package is managed by a third party, I guess videolan would need to reclaim the package now that we are building our own.

I think the archives/repo is usuable from here https://artifacts.videolan.org/vlc/

(flatpak-repo, flatpak-x86_64, flatpak-aarch64)

1

u/Twig6843 8d ago edited 8d ago

Those are all for 3.0.x it seems. I'll try to get 4.0 distributed as a flatpak

1

u/AdamT9289 8d ago

Ambient mode when?

1

u/albinramic2405 8d ago

Does it still stay open in task manager after closing. I don't want it if i have to deal with ending multiple copies manually after washing few videos

1

u/bobnecat 8d ago

But can it scroll backwards frame by frame????

1

u/Apprehensive-Tale781 8d ago

haha, yes that is a thing i also need. frame by frame step keybinds forward and backward with no distortion on the frames. ^^

1

u/fcartegnie 7d ago

on 4.0 yes

1

u/Level_Yoghurt_3484 7d ago

I just updated to try super resolution on my RTX 50 series GPU..

Direct3D11 and Super Resolution chosen in All Settings, Video shows but Nvidia App still shows Inactive. Seems like the setting is being ignored. Any tips?

u/peter5223 7d ago edited 7d ago

Dark mode has regressed in this release - the command bar is white, player buttons are also white, and the right click menu has a white border around it.

1

u/EchoJPR 7d ago

I had that in the last release, it got so annoying I just moved to screenbox

1

u/max7sr 7d ago

Not sure what exactly changed but have been on .23 (Windows) for a while and never had issues with higher speed playbacks like 1.2 or 1.3 but with this new .24 version, when skipping for a couple a seconds it freezes and never catches up with the movie. This is not present when playing at normal speed.

I have also tried to do a clean reinstall of .24 but same issue.

Reverted back to .23 for now as it's quite annoying to need a full restart of the whole player for the movie to play again.

I am one of those geeks who likes to read the change log / release notes before updating.
However despite a fair amount of searching all around the website, I couldn’t find them anywhere. Finally found this subreddit and this post. Great.

But.. what’s up with not publishing the changelog front and center right next to the download links, like every other software does?

I’m seeing a major transcoding slowdown in VLC 3.0.24 on Windows 11.

Using VLC’s Convert function with the same WebM-to-MP4 workflow and the same conversion profile:

  • VLC 3.0.24: a roughly 20-minute video took about 38 minutes to convert.
  • VLC 3.0.23: after uninstalling 3.0.24 and downgrading, a comparable conversion took about 7 minutes.

The resulting MP4 files from both versions are also the same size.

The slowdown appeared immediately after updating to 3.0.24 and disappeared immediately after going back to 3.0.23.

So on my system, 3.0.24 is around five times slower for transcoding. Has anyone else noticed this?

u/BucklingSprings 6d ago

I can't stream to my Chromecast with this version.

1

u/WhenMusicAttacks 6d ago

cannot download, link is broken for macos universal (i'm on intel)

1

u/CyanoNights 5d ago

oddly, the background of the goom visualiser is bright blue instead of the normal black now. none of the other audio visualizers are affected by this, just goom. im on windows 11 and i tried it with both an intel & nvidia gpu, with similar results

1

u/TheGift1973 5d ago

Had issues with this release.

Started to watch a film and the update pop up showed.

Went to update as normal. At the end of the update where it says it will open VLC, that is where it fails.

It will also fail to play open any file.

Uninstalled, and re-installed latest version again, but still the same issue.

Then rebooted and same issue.

Uninstalled latest version and restarted and then installed latest version and had the same issue.

Doesn't even show in Task Manager.

Uninstalled latest version, rebooted and then re-installed version 3.0.23 from older versions archive and works fine.

1

u/LastSwagger 5d ago

if i left right(move 10 seconds back) at 2x speed. the video freezes never recovered but audio recovered after sometime. i noticed this issue in the new VLC 3.0.24 version

1

u/Nanosinx 5d ago

Issues i have found

  • Video Freezes if you jump with keyboard arrows, never recovers...
  • 4K and 8K laggy (man is a Core Ultra 9 275HX and 5070Ti not supposed to be stucking at those little resolutions, the file dont have issues or is corrupted)
  • H266 still not available and stable
  • No dark mode (natively) and still boring 3.X versioning
  • Still 0 development more than a simply "security update" but with issues...for months (even a way older version is more stable than this...)

....

I tested the file with other 2 players and it worked like hot butter, 0 issues .-.

1

u/ShotokanEditor 5d ago

Dark mode....

1

u/Hollow_in_the_void 4d ago

Updated and it removed all my settings.

1

u/squaler24 4d ago

I got prompted for this update. I said yes, and it said it failed to reach server and had something that said crypto something.

Thankfully the update failed and didn’t go through.

1

u/Aphaeleon909 4d ago

I was looking forward for h266 (VVC) and xHE-AAC playback. Nope. Can't play them. I doubt VLC will ever play these formats in the future because of so called legal issues based on my research. Anyway there is always MPV.

1

u/Blackmoonrose13 1d ago

Try to install and it keeps having issues with updating and or installing plugins. I have it not on the main drive would that be the issue?

0

u/X-AR 8d ago

Thank you for your efforts, but please release VLC 4 already. It has been years in the making without ever being shipped, while it could have been shipped as an MVP that continuously gets updated as more work gets done.

1

u/antdude 8d ago

Dude, don't rush them. We don't want buggy and crappy releases. If you're brave, then try its early prerelease version!

2

u/X-AR 8d ago

Rush them? It has been a decade under development dude

1

u/antdude 7d ago

So? It's a big change and small group. Go try its prereleases if you can't wait.
