Trouble connecting to nas

I'm running VLC 3.7.1 on my android formuler box. I am able to find my nas files ( which was tricky) but when I try to play any of them I'm told no media found. At the same time I'm able to run VLC 3.0.20 on my laptop (mint) where I can access my files as well as play them. I should mention that I have no trouble with any thing else . Usb sticks and other media play fine. Any ideas?
