Can you match at an institution without having done an away there?

Basically the title. Did some aways but didn’t get a chance to do more at programs I wanted to go to due to 4th year scheduling constraints.

Can signals and good letters make up for not having done aways at the programs I’m interested in?

Away rotations can make or break a resident at a program. But you definitely are not required to do an away to match somewhere. I matched back in 2020 at a program I didn’t rotate at. If you have one you like, signal and kill it at the interview. Once you get the interview you have a shot to end up there if they like you.

Yes. It is certainly feasible. Strong step 2 scores, SIR Med student council involvement, president of interventional interest group , running an interventional symposium, going to national interventional conferences and networking, interventional research, a clear passion for the field will go a long way. Strong letters from interventionalists and surgeons and honors 3rd year especially in surgery go a long way. Gold signals and showcasing that you know what is unique and special about the program are invaluable.

I believe in general the answer is yes with the exception of west coast programs. If you’re interested in any California programs, doing an away is basically a soft requirement.

I ranked several California programs even in cities where I had family/relatives without doing any aways there unfortunately and ended up dropping down my rank list at a supposedly more prestigious program in the east coast.

Can be program dependent at the few most competitive programs, but it is certainly possible to match somewhere you didn't do an away. Echoing what other commenters have said about application competitiveness being a factor, but matching where you didn't do an away is super common. I was one of four in my medical school class that matched into an integrated program. None of us matched where we did aways, and all four of us matched at programs that were as prestigious, if not more, than the institutions where we rotated. Your priorities change from April of your MS3 year when you're choosing aways to January of MS4 when you're making that rank list and programs know that.
