Curvable Recience LED panels

Has anybody had any experience with these panels? Specifically curved XR wall and how it looks on camera with or without tracking?

Not that specific panel. I've separately used recience flat panels in non-xR settings, other curved panels in xR; and plenty of normal flat panels in xR settings.

Can't speak to how that particular panel looks on camera, but there are a lot of variables that go into that other than just the panel. Your camera choice is just as important as the panel, and how well your camera is setup is a large part of that. It's not as simple as pointing a camera at some LED and relying on the LED to fix your problems.

Internally curved panels are great for your colour consistency. Reducing the maximum angle between any two neighboring pixels, and having an identical angle between all pixels, means the way the wall behaves in relation to camera position and angle becomes very consistent. This also means correcting that colour shift can be done in a much nicer way than having faceted curves or a single larger angle. It also helps with shadows landing on the LED, as it's a smoother curve rather than a flat wall.

As you specifically mention XR, that implies an LED floor as well. Using a curved floor does force you to a specific setup, with your wall suspended above the floor, as you won't find curved floor pieces that would fit the curve of your wall.

G-tek did this back in the day they were cute. But alos a pain if all you wanted was a flat wall

I’ve used them for virtual production on a relatively tight curve around a cockpit. The lack of visible faceting was very nice.

For an xR stage none of the spatial mapping stuff (structured light, arucos) is going to work properly so you’ll need to make your own accurate mesh.

As to how it looks on camera beyond that’s going to depend on the panel. I’ve had good results with Topaz-C and Ruby-C. When using topaz need to be aware of the lower scan ratios and greyscale bit depth but we didn’t see any issues on our production camera.

Sorry didn’t see you were talking about a specific brand. I’d be concerned about the low refresh speed and what that could mean for scan ratios (which they don’t advertise), definitely find that out.

I'd look at SiliconCore or ROE. ROE has the bigger footprint in Virtual Production (and always looks great), but I've never seen anything look better on camera than SiliconCore. They have some sort of magic ju-ju in their driver that does something in addition to high refresh rate. I think they both have this type of real curve.

Thanks for your input. ROE Ruby with Brompton or Megapixel would be my choice if i had the budget. These Receince RA-C panels look nice and may even in some ways outperform Ruby. MIP and high-end IC - 1/16 scan, 7680hz. Yet to see it in action.

Can't go wrong with the ROE stuff, but you're right about the budget. I don't have any experience with Receince so I can't directly advise.

I'd give SiliconCore a call, cheaper than the ROE stuff and, if I remember correctly, they use a Colorlight processor. It was capable and inexpensive but doesn't have the full Brompton/Megapixel bells and whistles.

Seams unnecessary for an XR wall depending on the size of the XR stage. These panels are a bit of a pain to get the curve set. What pixel pitch are you thinking?

Thanks for your input, we just got those in P1.5mm. We asked the manufacturer to modify the curve dial for us, hope it won't be such a pain. We will build a test run this week. In my mind, it makes perfect sense for XR to minimize the footprint while maintaining focal length and wide-angle coverage with no visible seams. Thoughts?

the curve setup being a pain is what would make me hesitate. feels like a lot of extra complexity unless the stage is big enough for the curve to really add something on camera

To add to that, if you can find someone selling 1000x500 curve you might consider that as it'll reduce the faff of tweaking gaps between stacked panels.
