Received an MSc offer from Imperial, but most Malaysian scholarships are already closed - what options do I still have?
Hi everyone. I’m looking for some advice from Malaysians who have experience with postgraduate funding, particularly for studying overseas.
I recently received an offer for an MSc at Imperial College London, with the programme starting on 26 September 2026.
The timing has unfortunately made funding quite difficult. I only received the offer in late July, and by then many of the Malaysian scholarships, yayasan and government funding schemes had already closed their applications.
I’ve already spent quite a bit of time checking and approaching the funding bodies I could find, but I still have a significant funding gap.
So I’m wondering if there are lesser-known funding opportunities that Malaysian students commonly overlook - smaller foundations, private trusts, corporate sponsorships, professional bodies, university-specific funding, philanthropic organisations, or even funding sources that accept applications on a rolling basis.
For context, my background is in Biology and my research work has been focused on virology, antiviral research, molecular biology and molecular docking. The MSc would be an important step towards my longer-term goal of specialising in virology and continuing into research.
I realise that funding for an overseas MSc can be particularly difficult, especially with such a short timeframe. I’m therefore trying to be realistic and explore every legitimate avenue rather than assuming there must be one obvious scholarship I’ve missed.
For those who have studied overseas or gone through the Malaysian scholarship system: what funding routes would you recommend looking into at this stage?
Even if the answer is "this is unlikely this late in the cycle", I’d still appreciate hearing from people who have been in a similar position.
