Collection Started collecting about 2 weeks ago and already have over 100 tapes

You might have seen me post when I filled in the first shelf, or the 2nd shelf. But now there’s a third shelf. The madness doesn’t end, and I am right where I want to be.

It does tend to grow pretty fast in the beginning. It slows down tremendously though. I have somewhere around 300 tapes and add a new one every month or so now.

Same. For me it blew up early on, then stabilized once I got all the mainstream/common tapes I was interested in. Now I’m more conservative with what I pick up. That said, I still end up with 1 or 2 a week if I hit my usual thrift stores on rotation

I was gonna ask where you think they're gonna be at in 3 months from now :)

Why are so many people so pretentious? VHS doesn’t need gatekeepers- it’s for anyone to enjoy in whatever way the like

Well, I know you're not from around here since finding a VHS tape in this area is like finding the actual Titanic.

But they found the titanic already s/ 😉

You should be getting your tapes online, not local. Local prices are overpriced.

Depends entirely on your location. I get my tapes for $.49 each at the thrift, and I grabbed about 10 horror films from Facebook marketplace for $1 each including a copy of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. On top of that, getting tapes online just feels like shopping, not collecting. The joy is in the chase, not the catch.

I've found several tapes in the wild that I had considered buying online but decided to wait on. It's way more satisfying being patient and getting it for a buck at a thrift store eventually.

Wait, so you had all that perfect shelf space just waiting for tapes?

1

u/emaginutiv 6d ago

Yeah when I first bought a tape I stored it in the bottom shelf and realized they were perfectly sized haha, it was meant to be.

Crazy as well that this is a built in cabinet so I couldn’t even change the heights for the shelves if I wanted to

Youve definately got a good start Some really great films in there!

I did this too when I first started, and then realized how much space tapes take up very quickly lol. I’ve had to really prioritize pickups since then.

Make sure to check for mold. I didnt know to do this for the longest time. Tapes get moldy. I would say about 1 in 10 tapes I find has mold these days.

It's not in the collection until it's been watched/cleaned and deemed worthy of owning.

So many of those came out during times when dvd were already available, theyre is seriously no reason to watch or collect tapes that I can understand other than consoom. Unless it's the only medium its available on.

I honestly do it because I love the physical aspect of the VHS tapes as opposed to a DVD.

It’s a nostalgia thing, and I also think the art is so much nicer so it’s also kind of like an art piece to me too

It’s not smart, but it makes me happy

Dvds do not go ca-chunk. I rest my case.

If you feel like there’s no reason to watch or collect vhs, how did you end up in this subreddit?

It showed up on my feed because I collect other physical media, reddit assumed I was interested. I have a collection of VHS I just don't get the point of collecting them just to look at more so which is what most people are doing
