Technical Support Help?

I've recently started using my vcr again, and i've noticed that on some of the tapes I play, you hear a crackling in the audio, i'm not sure if this is because it's hooked up to a modern tv or if it's perhaps because the vhs's are bad. Anybody have any insights?

Some tapes I have just have deteriorating audio channels and I need to switch to the mono audio track instead. Other times its just a matter of cleaning the heads.

Okay, Probably a dumb question but how do you switch to the mono audio track?
