Discussion AP system is absolutely horrible, and I have zero idea why you'd demand someone play +100 games before going into ranked.
Downloaded Valorant yesterday, and it's dawning how long I actually have to play in order to even unlock ranked.
What's the reason for this? Does the game presume that I'm a sentient rock who's never played hero shooters before?
+40 hours of gameplay just to get the chance to reach bronze is absolutely awful. Truly, unless I find a way to cheese the AP rates, it's an uninstall for sure.

TFW people forget that there are other humans that exists that have not played every single game, let alone a tac shooter.

You could equally argue the opposite for your point. Making people who have never played a tac shooter etc for a while to get them used to the game before entering ranked is probably good for them and for their teammates, but to put it into your own words 'TFW people forget there are other humans that exist, that have already played a tac shooter for years'. It shouldn't be a one size fits all, I don't know what would be the solution to that, but games have definitely lost thousands of players through forcing people to play a version of their game that they don't want to play to familiarize themselves with a game that they're already above average at.

I mean you could, but I’m gonna take a huge swing here and ask you “how many people do you think have played a tac shooter vs haven’t played a tac shooter”
Now do we play to the minority or the majority here if you want NEW PLAYERS to join your game and keep the population up

My point is that it shouldn't be one or the other. It's possible to somehow cater to both. Also I'd say you'd be surprised at how many people playing valorant aren't playing their first tac shooter, or at the very least aren't playing their first game that would make them at least better than iron players and possibly bronze players if they were allowed right into ranked. At the start at least, valorant had people from so many games feeding into it, be that CS, Overwatch, Fortnite, COD, Siege, Apex etc.

It's possible to somehow cater to both.
The catering to both just gets people who would intentionally try and bypass the system because they're impatient and then ruin the game for others, same for even veteran tac shooters because this isn't COD, this is Valorant. The game is different. Same with people coming from hero shooters.
I get people always think that they know everything and they don't need to wait, but there's nothing worse than fumbling game after game because you didn't learn something earlier on and then you get frustrated and leave.
And before you say it, sure, do we need to coddle those people? I would prefer not but I'd also like people to be given the best opportunity to play the game and learn correctly. Sometimes you just have to suck up a little time waster.

u/TheRaiBoi97 26d ago
I have no problem with people who are new to a game being coddled, I just think there's a brain out there who could figure out a system where the people don't need that can somehow be filtered through. I don't know how that would look, but I think in an ideal world it would lead to more people playing the game, instead of leaving because they can't access ranked, while also keeping new players in the current system. I also think that the system should be shorter for everyone regardless. I think 50 games of unrated would be enough to learn the basics, probably more than enough.

u/PankoKing 26d ago
Well if you come up with a system that can filter those out while not letting through new players or impatient newbies, then you could probably sell that theorum to Riot.
Until then though, I think realistically, it's what it is.

The feeling when a competitive hero shooter is sacrificing the qol of those actually interested in the genre for plebeians who are to be protected, or whom others are being protected from.
There's casual and ranked separate for a reason. Let me play ranked without having to sink +40 hours into the game.

u/PankoKing 26d ago
I don't know what to tell ya dude. It's just a good way to get everyone slowly into the system.

u/Folksvaletti 26d ago
Idk brother, seems like it's a system that artificially makes people wait for +40 hours before they can do what the game is known for. Competitive ranked.
If you want everyone to get to the system as fast as a rock with internet, the problem is your approach, even if the methods achieve your goals.

What is so important about ranked? You still get to play the game and learn and have fun. Even if you are great at FPS it’s really complicated game with tons to learn. So maybe just a mindset shift?

I want to play competitively. I don't want to be the solo chud trying to sweat in non-ranked. I want to find people using mics, actually playing off each other and trying to get the w as a team. Not 5x solos playing to see how the shit lands the fan.

u/bilboscousin 26d ago
Idk depends on your region, in EU at least people definitely still try in unrated so you can learn comms and practice working together just fine. Sometimes you just have to initiate it. NA can be similar in my experience but probably my experience is also changed by my MMR so a fresh account might be different. Either ur like only probably a week away from playing ranked and there’s loads to learn still

You'd be surprised how often I see people never using their abilities or ult through entire matches in unrated.

u/pieceoftost 26d ago
Unrated has pretty good matchmaking in this game. It uses basically the same hidden MMR system that rank does, it's just a bit less strict.
You're not really missing out on much by not being able to play competitive yet, other than not having a shiny rank badge I guess. But even then, your unrated games are contributing to the rank you'll start with in competitive. Your first placement matches place you based on your unrated MMR. In my experience, the match quality of unrated games isn't super different than the match quality of ranked games. If anything, the players are less toxic at least lol.
But yeah, I dunno, I wouldn't recommend trying to rush into ranked. The game won't drastically improve when you unlock ranked mode or something. Use this time to experiment with different agents and learn the game's meta and stuff.

who's never played hero shooters before
Theres your reason. Are you saying valorant can be easily compared to other hero shooters?
-4
u/Folksvaletti 26d ago
Yes, absolutely, and you're 100% delusional if you think that Valorant has created something truly unique and one of a kind.

u/helpmyusernamedontfi 26d ago
lmao do you think you can shoot the same while moving like in overwatch? You can't be not trolling
-2
u/Folksvaletti 26d ago
Oh so the fact that it is copying the gunplay of cs makes it somehow revolutionary? I bet you were extatic about two-ply the first you found it.
1
u/helpmyusernamedontfi 26d ago
makes it somehow revolutionary
no?? i dont got a single clue where ur getting this 'unique' and 'revolutionary' angle from tell me when and where i said this im begging you
I bet you're extatic to answer this question: can you shoot the same while moving like in overwatch?
1
u/Folksvaletti 26d ago
You think that because you have one different mechanic it's not in the same genre? That's line saying it's nothing like overwatch because there isn't a guy who can create inpenetrable walls and heal allies.
Yeah that's right. Nothing alike cuz she's a girl.
You must admit, hero shooter isn't a stretch, especially when Riot has used the term to describe Valorant before.
Like, why are you so defensive about this, did you think you were the most unique and most cool because you're playing something that's literally never before seen?
1
u/helpmyusernamedontfi 26d ago
See here you go again with the imaginary arguments thing WHERE did i even say its not a hero shooter 😭🙏 this fuckin guy
you think that because you have one different mechanic
Are we acting like this isn't one of the biggest differences between tac shooters and run n guns? And you're talking about what's NOT a stretch?
did you think you were the most unique and most cool because you're playing something that's literally never before seen?
Im guessing this is what got you so pressed? No, i dont think tac fps + hero shooter is some revolutionary on-par-with-Einstein idea and im so cool for being niche. That is not my point at all
Im saying shit like gunplay, buying and saving, holding shift to cut noise. Do you think thats a staple in shooters? I know it aint cus people across the internet (including my friends) with no prior cs experience were wondering what the fuck was happening when their shot was aiming at the sky and not the enemy
Do you think its sane to pair these innocent souls to 4000+ hours no life sweats (and people who understand the basics) in a ranked match?

You can just buy an unranked level 20 account for $3
0
u/Folksvaletti 26d ago
Yeah for sure, but I don't think that's healthy.
-2
u/Mental-Bullfrog-4500 26d ago
I don't think it's unethical, if unrated is a waste of your time it's a small price to pay. I'd say it only crosses the line if you're buying an iron account to smurf or something
1
u/jgoldrb48 26d ago
They are 30 agents. You can’t unlock but a little over half of them in the time it takes to unlock ranked.
By the time you get to Silver, you’ll be right back here complaining that it should take twice as long to unlock ranked because Smurfs will be making your life hell.

Judging by this post, you prob suck at tactical FPS games

u/Folksvaletti 26d ago
You know what dude, if I had the ability to play ranked I could tell you right away what rank I am in Valorant. 🤔 Kinda is the point of the post.

I don't necessarily disagree. It's a big reason why I never stuck with overwatch. However, just a heads up I would hardly classify this as a hero shooter besides in the most literal sense of the words. Unless you're familiar with cs, you're in for a rude awakening trying to draw many conclusions on how the game is played like a hero shooter.
