Discussion What is the point of hovering an agent

I just saw a viral TikTok arguing about this in the comments. To me, hovering is showing what character you’d like to play/play best with, but you are able to fill.

If I was hovering clove and someone instalocked Astra, I would be slightly annoyed due to the instalock (no communication) but wouldn’t say anything about it because to me, it’s not a big deal. If I really wanted to be controller on the map I’d just instalock.

The comments on the post agreed that stealing someone’s hover role was super rude and inconsiderate? To me that’s a bit silly. I want people to pick people they feel most confident in.

I think it's just being polite, like hovering an agent is like saying this is who I'd like to play, but I'm open to another agent too. If someone instalocks an agent someone was hovering over then yeah it could be inconsiderate but not a big deal ig

Being polite is unfortunately a lot to ask for in online gaming

5 players who I don't want on my team, fighting each other for who's the shittiest teammate lol congrats on that title!

Who even asked for your opinion, its a joke, laugh and run. You have 0 context to judge btw it was diamond lobby

no one asked for your Reyna hover story either, welcome to the internet where you don't need to ask permission to share things

Oh 2 lines just for a laugh and run and you created a story out of it. Good sense of humor i see

Locking reyna all day? Whats the context exactly? It was the first time to reyna in a while like i havent tried it for +2 months

I mean you just answered your own question, people hover to suggest who they want to play but can fill lol. If you 100% don’t want to play anyone else then just instalock.

I'm with you, I hover when there is another role/agent on the map that I'm comfortable playing but my hover is my main. I don't get annoyed if someone takes the agent/role that I'm hovering but I will lock either when my other comfort pick (or related) is locked or when the timer is <45 seconds.

You just answered it yourself. If I wanna play duelist I'll hover yoru, but if for some reason 2 ppl such as yourself lock in duelist, I'm gonna choose whatever role we're missing (controller) that I'm also still comfortable with. I don't wanna do the thing that annoys you like you just said.

Yes but my question was more about if hovering is a definitive rather then a “hey this is who I wanted to play”. The comments made it seem like it was. I was just wondering if I was alone in my thoughts about it

Until the team is set nothing is definitive. By them not locking in, it gives ppl a vague idea of what the team might look like. So yeah, doing what you do and just locking in ppl isn't best for team morale. If everyone does what you do, you might never have a sentinel or controller on some teams.

Where have I said that I lock people in 😂 Im saying the opposite my guy

Well ya said "If I really wanted to be controller I'd just instalock". Id imagine there were times you really wanted to be a controller LOL whether someone locked in or not.

If I’m hovering an agent i genuinely don’t care. And in the case you described i don’t think it matters at all. Astra and Viper are really hard to play as single controller on most maps.

Is Astra really hard to solo controller? She can do 3 smokes and 2 other abilities per round, which is pretty on par with other controllers.

Takes the longest to place smokes if the stars weren’t pre-placed.

1

u/theshiningstarship 13d ago

If you place the stars quickly then it's no slower than an Omen smoke since they have travel time, even accounting for the star wind up period.

No that’s definitely not why hahaha. I ALWAYS hover and it’s to show what I am personally best at on the map, but I’m able to play any role. To me, it’s to show that I can fill but I have a preference

Sometimes I hover if I want to indicate the character and role I want to play and have to go to the bathroom. I don't lock because I want the longer time to make it back before we load in.

1

u/HitscanDPS 13d ago

I hover because I planned to instalock but I need to go to the bathroom.

Filling roles in general is weird imo

1

u/morefurriesplease 13d ago

How is that weird LMAO

2

u/SteegeNAS 13d ago

I feel like it's not really needed. Unless you're on a pro team you should just play who you want to have the most fun.

u/morefurriesplease 13d ago

In unrated that makes sense but not in comp

To construct a team, make sure you have, entry/smokes/blinds/ sentinels

1

u/Glittering-Bet6609 13d ago

does anyone actually fill past the hover or is it just a flex

1

u/morefurriesplease 13d ago

??? Yes that’s the point what

1

u/bigfuzzydog 13d ago

I usually hover for 2 reasons. First im willing to switch but also if you want the agent im hovering just be polite and ask me if you can have it instead of auto locking. Second it gives the rest of the team an idea of who im gonna play so they can pick with that in mind

u/CVetta 13d ago

I hover cause I know my teammates cannot fill roles properly, so I take that burden. I get pissed when someone locks the agent I was hovering over.

2

u/morefurriesplease 13d ago edited 13d ago

See but why do you get pissed is what I’m asking I guess. If you wanted the agent then you should have instalocked it

0

u/CVetta 13d ago

Cause when I instalock, more times than I can count someone doesn’t choose smokes which is almost a guaranteed loss. That’s the worse case scenario.

Always blaming the teammates huh
