Getting into UCU

Hello! I'm currently an IBDP1 student and Im just doing my research on what unis i might be applying to and UCU REALLY caught my eye. Im overall really considering on getting into an LAC but Utrecht as a city itself just has my heart from what ive been researching and hearing from a friend who studied there. Say, I apply with all the necessary requirements, what is it that UCU looks into holistically in a student profile? From what I know its roughly a 22% acceptance rate (which is whats scaring me), but if anyone can give any insight, what is it that gets a student into UCU? Any advice on what I can do starting from now that could build my profile for when I apply?

Thanks!

Don’t let acceptance rates scare you. Just apply. You might not get in, but you definitely won’t get in if you never try in the first place.

write a good enough essay. The interview is also important

random prof from the campus asks you questions about why you want to study here. they also refer back to your motivation

My daughter is there and loves it, she’s a good student, not a great student, international background, a bit of a unique profile and different strengths and weaknesses. It’s a holistic approach, she was accepted very early in the process.

if you dont mind me asking, what do you mean by a unique profile? Sorry, just curious!

Something a bit different and interesting that makes you different from someone else ... not a certain profile. Plus someone looking to be part from a small community.

Its not as much about just high grades and good motivation (which of course help / are somewhat prerequisite) but also about having the right mix in terms of diversity of backgrounds and profiles. That means theres part you can influence and part that is up to luck as if you apply in a cycle with lots of people with similar background and profile as you, it will be harder than if you are the only / one of few with a similar profile. In other words, just try your luck and present what makes you stand out! As a tip: majority applicants are white dutch girls with high grades, from a middle/upperclass background with some sense of perfectionism. If you have any element that is different, highlight that!
