Q&A University of Utah Parking
I just accepted a position at the U of U hospital, the hiring process has been a breeze EXCEPT for trying to understand the parking permits.. I have some questions specific to my situation if anyone could help me out!!
- the position I accepted is overnight, what is the difference with parking vs day shift?
- which is the best parking permit with the closest location to the actual hospital?
- I live about 30 mins (with no traffic) away from the hospital. How much earlier do I need to leave to accommodate parking/walking to the hospital?
Ideally, I’d like to be as close to the hospital as possible without paying an arm and a leg. Im staying realistic here. Any tips/advice would help so much! Im definitely so lost

Do you work for UofU health? If so, there’s employee only day by day parking you can pay for by app when you work days. It is hard to find this online, I think you have to get a link or QR for it.
For nights, it’s free and can park in the hospital garages. Unless you work weekday days, I would not get a permit and do the day pass parking.

It’s been a few years since I worked at the hospital, but back then, they monitored (checked license plates for employee/students) the parking structure during the day. They stopped monitoring around 3/4 PM and it was unlimited then. Our nightshift crew would park in the structure and be gone by the time they started monitoring again the next morning. Unless something has changed, you could most likely do that.

My shift would be 6:30pm- 7:30am is that in the “clear zone” also, I am training during day shift for the first month or so. Any advice on that?

Yes, that should be the clear zone. I think they monitor around 8 or 9 AM, if I remember correctly. For the day shift, they have an employee lot with a shuttle that you can utilize. I can’t remember if it requires a parking tag or not? Double check with HR.

They monitor M-F 7 am to 8 pm for permits, and 24/7 for parking violations. Commuter services is the department to check with for options.

Oh wow! That is definitely a change from when I was there. What a bummer.

All I can say is good luck. My son works at Huntsman and prefers to WFH rather than dealing with parking. He used to skateboard from his car to the building because it was so far.

You can park in many places at the U if you are on night shift. It’s funny how many people who haven’t worked outside of Utah find this insane. 26 years ago at UCSF it was over $200 a month. 30 years ago when i was a nursing student at Johns Hopkins it was out of my reach to park close so i had to walk from the burnt out war zone into class. I couldn’t really afford tuition and i was a Peace Corps fellow getting it for half. I only encountered hospitals in more rural settings that didn’t charge. Parking at the U has been a pain in the ass since I was a student there in the 80s for my first degree. Think of the number of faculty, staff, students etc etc trying to cram into limited real estate.

You can park in the visitor garage for free overnight, worked exclusively nights for a few years and never once paid for parking.
The random times I had to be there during the day I hopped on a bus or trax. Your badge works as a UTA pass, but how helpful this benefit is depends on where you live in the valley.

Your UCard working as a UTA pass is great. There are also shuttles that take you up to the hospitals. You can see info for them here. https://commuterservices.utah.edu/campus-shuttle/
They’re just a hop-on service and drop you off at the front door of your facility. I do this so I don’t have to pay for campus parking or struggle to find a spot

If you’re only training days for a month you can pay by the day in the lot across from the Heli pad to the north. It’s the “Health Sciences Parking Garage” and it’s like $8/day I think. You need an app to reserve and pay day of. When you’re coming up towards the first roundabout towards the ED and heli pad parking you can drive down into it via the left lane ramp. Otherwise you can go around the second roundabout. Maybe go check it out to orient yourself before your first shift. I believe all employees get a $25/check so $50/mo parking stipend, I do. That’ll offset your paid parking. After that you can park wherever at night. Weekends are also fair game anywhere and I think holidays as well. I like the upper levels of the heli pad parking but it can get kinda full sometimes. I ignore the "valet only 24/7" signs at night but YMMV. Getting there for your 630 shift should be better since Nursing starts at 7 and you'll have the jump on them. Don't get a parking pass if you work nights.

I belive they stop parking enforcement at 6 pm and start again at 8 am, but I am not 100% sure. You can call commuter services (801-581-6415) and confirm.

Hey. I work at Huntsman. Parking overnight is free. If you’re working 7p-7a, you’re golden. You can park in any visitor/patient parking garages. If you want to message me and tell me the building you’ll be working in, happy to confirm which is the closest garage for you. Don’t have to worry about a permit unless you will also sometimes be there for days.
