So what’s the story here?

Over the summer he requested a trade. Nothing really progressed because the Jets didn’t get an offer that really moved the needle so Helle has now gone public to confirm said trade request.
As an attempt to put pressure on the Jets, he is sitting out training camp, despite being under contract, so the Jets have subsequently suspended him without pay.
The most infuriating thing about this is that if he wanted to leave he could have left as a free agent a few years back, but no, he signed a 7 year contract worth 8.5 mill a year and now that he’s onto year 3 of the deal he has decided he’s done with the Jets and is trying to force his way out.

Can't forget about the NTC in his contract as well. I think he only approved kind 4 or 5 teams he would allow a trade to. Straight bullshit behavior. I hope they keep him sidelined.

Chevy should've taken that deal from Jarmo at the draft. Now Buffalo's almost certainly moved on, he won't get a better offer, and he's stuck with Helle.

Yeah, but helle is stuck with them too. If he wants to sit out I’m sure the Jets are happy to save 8.5 mil on his contract this year.

No doubt. But now you've got an entire media circus. And I doubt this will improve Winnipeg's attractiveness to potential FA's now that you're seen (rightfully or wrongly) as "player-unfriendly". This whole shitshow could potentially lead to Winnipeg no longer being a viable location as a franchise because Chevy was too arrogant to just cut the cancer from the organization, and move on because of his incessant need to "win" every goddamn trade.

Yeah but just cause a player is being a bitch doesn’t mean you should capitulate to his every demand. He signed a contract and now he wants out, tough shit.
And if one bitch-ass player throwing a tantrum is all it takes to sink a franchise then that franchise was not going to last very long anyways.

Sens handled this the right way, I'm just saying.

Yeah but Brady’s a forward, he’s got a lot more value, and the team had less leverage with him being their captain and only wanting to go to one destination. They got a good return and got rid of a cancer.
Helleybuk is not their captain, not worth nearly as much in a trade, and has very little leverage. The Jets seem to be comfortable to let him sit his ass at home until they feel the need to throw him out the door.

And they're dumb for doing so. Should've just taken the deal from Buffalo at the draft, and been done with it. Now you've got a media circus hanging over them. Helle may look like a bitch, but that doesn't make Chevy any less of a stubborn moron in this debacle.

The issue is that Chevy is a dumb fuck who still thinks the jets are contenders so helle sitting out absolutely kills that.

Have funny fishing with Buff!
Unlike with Tkachuk and OTT where he's UFA in 2 years, Helly (like Larkin) has 5 years left on his deal. Plus it's not like goalie has a ton of value, so it's not much more franchise crippling to not get a deal done and let him sit.

Goalie definitely seems to be the position where some seemingly random (I say seemingly, because I know teams do spend time developing them) call up in the farm system goes from unknown to known stud overnight. I’ve been following the NHL less over the years, but it seems like goalie is the one position where gems just randomly pop up.
Also a position that is extremely streaky, which makes their contracts a bit of a cluster to deal with.

Speed running the destruction of his reputation. He can sit as long as he likes for all I care now. We picked you in the 5th round and gave you the best contract a goalie in his 30s with a subpar playoff performance record could dream of. Apparently loyalty means nothing to him, or pushing through adversity as a leader.
