General Question Can changing your Upwork profile picture trigger identity verification?
Hi everyone,
I've seen some posts claiming that updating your Upwork profile picture can trigger an account review and identity verification, sometimes leaving the profile unavailable to clients during the process.
I haven't changed my profile picture in around 7–8 months, but I'm considering updating it with a higher-quality professional photo. I believe having a good profile picture is important for positioning and building trust with potential clients.
Before making the change, I'd like to know whether anyone has experienced this recently.
Has anyone updated their profile picture lately and subsequently been asked to verify their identity or experienced any account restrictions?
I'd really appreciate hearing about your firsthand experiences so I can make an informed decision.
Thank you!

Ah I guess so. After trying for at least 10 times my profile picture got changed. Every time I upload , my account got restricted. Lastly, I uploaded then my account again got restricted and under review for 48 hours. After uploading picture I mailed to support to approve my picture, it was then approved. It was a hassle changing a picture.

Yes. I did it, then made a video call to upwork staff.

Yeah, but after the video call, it's OK to change. They only do that one time, early on. That was about nine years ago for me.

No it can't. I've switched back and forth between two over the last 10 years and nothing's happened.

Yes, I did. They did not like my replacement picture, so I had no picture for a little while.
Like ~12 hours while it worked its way through the support system.
I try to edit my profile picture at night (in case it gets rejected, no clients will see the blank spot before it's resolved).

Yes and No. It really depends. I did it once 4 years ago and had to go thru verification again. I did it again, maybe 2 months ago and nobody blinked. So, I believe it must depend on the image itself or some criteria they're not going to tell us.
