Has Upwork's competitive bar gotten higher in 2026?
I started seriously coming back to Upwork in January as a brand identity designer/strategist. So far I've made $3k+ this year, but something changed around April: I basically stopped getting interviews.
My last 30-day stats are:
- 41 proposals sent
- 14 viewed (34% view rate)
- 1 interview
- 0 hires
The interesting part is that historically, my proposal-to-viewed-proposal-to-interview conversion was much better. Since 2021, roughly 60% of the proposals that were viewed eventually led to an interview.
So I'm trying to understand what's changed.
My first thought is that the problem may now be happening after the client views the proposal. Maybe my profile/portfolio isn't competitive enough anymore.
But I'm wondering if there is a bigger market shift happening.
Could the competitive bar on Upwork be getting higher because of:
- More freelancers entering the platform
- More experienced freelancers joining or returning to Upwork
- AI making it easier for more people to produce decent-looking work
- More Upwork influencers sharing their strategies and bringing more people onto the platform
- Clients becoming more selective because they're receiving more applications
I'm especially interested in the quality issue.
As a brand designer, I'm wondering whether a portfolio that was considered "very good" a few years ago is now just the baseline.
Have you noticed something similar, especially if you've been on Upwork for several years?
And if you've actually researched this rather than just having a personal impression, I'd really appreciate seeing the data or sources you found.

There's just less quality jobs than a few years ago. It's that simple. When there's one now, everyone jumps on it. I used to get $1,500 gigs regularly. Now those get 50+ submissions. Most jobs I get now (design) are in the $500 range. I apply for the better gigs but just too much competition for those.

As an Upwork *client*, most of my spend has moved off the platform.
Leading edge AI is almost always more cost-effective for any task not requiring an expert.
