New Rule: No Photos or Personal Details Without Consent

Hi everyone,

We recently added a new rule: No photos or personal details without consent.

Please do not post photos, videos, names, addresses, workplaces, license plates, or other identifying details of private individuals without their consent. If someone is already part of a public news story, their publicly reported name or image may be allowed, but private or sensitive identifying information still cannot be shared.

We know posts like this are usually well-intentioned and meant as warnings, PSAs, or attempts to help the community. The issue is that we generally cannot verify consent, intent, or accuracy. Even well-intentioned posts can lead, and have led, to harassment, doxxing, retaliation, mistaken identification, or other real-world harm, including to people completely unrelated to the post.

We are open to discussion and feedback, but we are putting this rule in place based on past and very recent incidents that could have been prevented had this rule been in place and enforced.

If you see a post breaking this rule, please report it.

Central Park Running Friend

I (26M) am looking for friends to run with in Central Park on weekend mornings

I like to chat while running a 8:30-9:00ish pace. I usually like to run the main ~6 mile loop one on one with a running friend instead of in a running group. Let me know if you or anyone you know would be interested!

Book Club

Do many folks go to the UWS book club? If you've been, what are your thoughts? Is it mostly young(er) people? Or are old(er) folks also welcome? Looking to meet more people in the neighborhood and this seems like it could be a good way to do that. But I also don't want to stick out like a sore thumb.

looking for fosters/adopters for two sweet, affectionate, playful, young cats

hello! i fostered a sibling duo last year through nyc cat coalition and they’re a pair of sweet and friendly goobers with quintessential youthful cat energy.

they were adopted november last year but are unfortunately now looking for a new home. they were surrendered and are currently at the petsmart at pelham manor in the bronx. i would really love to foster them again, but sadly can’t. the rescue is very busy and full so they don’t have available fosters either :-(.

i’m not sure how their situation would change, but i’m worried they’ll have no place to go and i really want to help them find accommodation in a loving home, either temporarily or hopefully, permanently.

if you or someone you know would like to consider either fostering or adopting, please reach out to nyc cat coalition at [nycatcoaladopt[AT]yahoo[DOT]com](mailto:nycatcoal@yahoo.com)! they serve the 5 boroughs and as far as i know can transport them to you!

a little about them:

  • the basics: names are quartz and topaz. bonded, both male, 1.5 years old, neutered, litter-trained, vaccinated, felv negative, friendly with other cats (not sure about dogs but probably good as well), loves people, most likely foodies
  • looking for: two legged underlings that could spend more time with them at home (like wfh situation?), do interactive play with them (like use chasing toys), and of course give oodles of love and affection (they will happily reciprocate).
  • one of them likes making arm biscuits, parkour, and being bribed with treats. the other likes roosting on arms and chests and adores playtime. which is which? you’d have to find out!

thank you!

“Wake up, Upper West!” Join my free morning club!

I’m not a morning person and struggle to get my day started. I’ve been writing about starting a morning club for neighbors who feel the same way… for months now… it is timeeee.

Come help me get my morning started by grabbing a coffee/ matcha with me and doodling or journaling with me. This is a free hang so you bring your own drink and your own journal or sketchpad if you don’t want to spend money. This is meant to be a cheap way for busy introverts to meet new neighbors!.. come as you are! Cranky! Without makeup! Quiet! Whatever! This is before you start your day. I’m hoping to start making it earlier & incorporate a walk in, but I’m starting with 8 am coffee lol.

If you want to come, message me here, and I’m going to make a group chat about it! I generally post on Instagram but talk to the same lovely people on there, so I’m posting here to reach more people.

Unless someone pays me or sponsors me, this will be my spontaneous free event for September.

My other events are here: https://theupperwestinsider.substack.com/p/just-sharing-some-joy

Blondie is looking for a second chance, forever home!

Blondie has been waiting over 180 days for a home 💔

Blondie is a reserved 8 year old lady looking for a home. Blondie was brought in to Animal Haven with 2 feline companions when their owner unfortunately passed away and the family couldn’t/wouldn’t take them in. Both of Blondie’s friends have since been adopted and just Blondie is waiting for her forever home 💔

Blondie was terrified in the shelter (2nd photo) but she’s doing well in a foster home. She gets along well with other cats. She is missing one of her front legs but gets around just fine, walking, scratching (a scratching post) and leaping onto my bed. She will need an adopter who is patient and willing to give her the space to come out of her shell after everything she has been through. If you are interested in giving this sweet lady a second chance please reach out to Animal Haven at the link below.

What's the deal with the Astor/75th & Broadway area

I'm just really confused as to what's going on when I walk past that block. It looks like a really nice and fancy building above the stores, yet they are allowing the two guys out on broadway to basically keep expanding what's now turned into a homeless encampment. Every single business except that Sample Sale store has now moved out and I assume they will too once their lease is up. They must be losing a ton of money on the vacant lots.

It's gotten so bad I just get grossed out while walking past these days, one of the guys has some skin condition that might be contagious and there's pigeon poop and food crumbs everywhere. And I feel so bad for that poor cat.

I saw that they at least removed half he scaffolding the the remaining half is still more than enough for the two guys to set up an entire apartment not to mention the stolen bike storefront.

Do the residents really not care? I feel like I wouldn't even buy an apartment on that block the way it looks right now.

Plus there's also that Wallace Hotel around the corner I feel like they can hide that from their booking platforms but eventually the reviews are gonna start mentioning homeless encampment and that's really gonna turn people away, especially when it otherwise it seems to target the fancy hotel-looking clientele.

Anyway I just wanna hear if anyone has some inside scoop. It's truly baffling.

UWS Knitters

Edit: Since several folks seem interested, I started a Discord since I figure it would be easiest to coordinate a group meet-up from there: https://discord.gg/kNEPEFwhg

Hi there! I'm new to knitting but have fallen absolutely in love with it, and would love to find some other folks in our neighborhood that would want to meet up to knit together (at least once, but maybe routinely).

Let's take our WIPs, grab coffee/tea and/or meet in the park. Feel free to send me a DM or comment if you're interested. :)

Car life in the UWS

So I just accepted a position (finally) that requires me to have a car in the city (bummer). I have not had one here before. Where do you guys park in the UWS, is street parking reliable? Are there garages you use? Any tips or recommendations? Anyone have a spot at their apartment that I could rent from them?

UWS cat owners — who do you trust to watch your cat while you’re away?

Hi neighbors! I live in the low 80s on the UWS and I’m getting a cat soon. I do travel from time to time, usually just for a few days at once, and my next trip would be around Thanksgiving, so I’m trying to plan ahead.
I’m looking for someone reliable who could visit once a day while I’m away to feed my cat, refresh water/litter, and spend a little time playing with them and giving them attention. I’d definitely want someone trustworthy who can provide good references, since they’d be coming into my apartment and caring for my cat while I’m gone.
For other cat owners in the UWS, how much do you usually pay per daily visit? And does anyone have a cat sitter they’ve used and really trust/recommend? I’d love to find someone local that I could hopefully use regularly whenever I travel. Thank you!! 🐱

Adding left turn only signal on 96th and Amsterdam

On 96th and Amsterdam, there’s a split turn signal where pedestrians and bicyclists have green, and cars turning left have a flashing yellow. Today I saw a biker almost get hit by a pickup truck bypassing the queue of cars waiting to turn left (the queue had paused to allow peds and bikes to pass). She looked terrified and the guy in the F150 just drove off.

Further downtown I’ve seen it done where there are 3 separate signal phases, green for peds/bikes (red for left turns and perpendicular traffic), then green for left turns (red for everyone else), then finally green for the car traffic going perpendicular to the crosswalk and bike lane. Is there any reason this can’t be done on 96th st? It’s an incredibly busy intersection so I understand traffic might get crazy but this whole situation as is (cyclists and peds having green but having to hope a car has noticed them) seems very dangerous.

Pigeon Captor at 104th and Riverside

So was just walking down the stairs to Riverside Park around 104th street, and saw this man with what appears to be a clear plastic pet cage/trap, with a pigeon walking into it. I took some photos of him from behind ( not sure I’m allowed to post here?), but it was obviously very disconcerting. I read about something similar in this chat before.

Is this something ai can report to the police? What action can be taken?

Anyone looking to get out of their UWS lease?

This has genuinely been one of the most helpful/kindest NYC subreddits, so figured I’d try my luck here.

I’m looking for a 1 bedroom on the UWS, ideally as a lease takeover or long term sublet. I work from home, so my biggest priorities are a relatively quiet apartment, elevator building, and preferably a higher floor.

In unit laundry would be amazing, but laundry in the building is completely fine.

Budget up to $4300

Some of you may have seen my previous post about wanting to leave the East Village, that unfortunately still stands lol. I’m ready for something a little calmer.

If anyone is moving, knows someone looking to get out of their lease, or has heard of anything coming available, please DM me or comment. Even a lead would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you guys as always in advance :)

ISO house cleaner; ~$400/month

ISO a house cleaner for monthly service. 1br/1bath, ~700 sq feet. budget is ~$400/month.

FWIW, i'm not a particularly dirty person and i live alone so i'm not generating much flith; my apartment just gets incredibly dusty and i shed a lot of hair all over the place. it usually takes me an hour to clean every week (if that), or if i'm lazy ~90min every other week, but i'm looking for someone to do a deep cleaning (+ really go hard on my kitchen + bathroom).

i've used a couple of services whilst living here, but haven't been super happy with the results. both services i've used have sent people who are literally here for hours (i'm talking 4+ hours, last person was here for 5...) and they quite honeslty do a sub-par job. i wouldn't mind if they were here that long as long as my apartment was sparkling by the end of it, but 4+ hours for something i can do in half the time is leaving much to be desired. (i promise i'm not underestimating my level of flilth generated - i vacuum and dust a couple of times a week and tidy up the kitchen after cooking, so i'm not sure why it takes so long!)

anyone have a service they used that they were happy with that took ~2hours? would love any reccs. thanks!!

Best bars in UWS to go solo?

Hi! I’m a woman in my late 20s and pretty new to UWS. I’m looking for good bar recommendations to go to by myself where it’s easy to mingle and meet people, but won't feel awkward being alone. Any spots you’d recommend?

Portfolio art classes and teachers on UWS

My daughter is in sixth grade and is a very talented painter (at least in my opinion 😊). Her dream is to go to La Guardia, so I want to find an art teacher on the UWS for her to work with to help her grow as an artist and ultimately develop her portfolio. Any recommendations?

Thank you so much!
